Dithiolene complexes, and more specifically the nickel derivatives, are involved in materials used for optical data storage, such as compact disc or laser disc read-only memory (CD- or LD-ROM), and also in copiers or photography related devices. In the latter case, it is the IR-absorbing property that is exploited. Some of these compounds can be found in reviews by Mueller-Westerhoff et al. (353, 354). Recent patents are given as examples in references (458—481). In the field of optical storage, short reviews were published in 1988 (482) and 1990 (362, 483). Here, the dithiolene complexes act as inhibitors of the laser-induced fading of the colored thin layers of the optical discs. They also act as an antioxidant and increase the photostability of the cyanine dyes that constitute the recording layer. Contrary to what was observed for the two... [Pg.463]

McDonald, Paul. Video and DVD Industries. London British Film Institute, 2008. Ebramines the husiness of video entertainment and details divisions of the video business. It outlines industry battles over incompatible formats, from the Betamax-VHS war to competing laser disc systems, alternatives such as video compact disc or Digital deo Express, and the introduction of HD DVD and Blu-ray high-def-inition systems. [Pg.1363]

Read Only media are already on the scene in the form of laser discs (videoK compact discs (audio) and CD-ROM s, while developments are still occurring in the area of WORM and erasable media. It is the latter two categories to which the remainder of this paper is devoted. [Pg.173]

GaAs, GaAlAs, and GaP based laser diodes are manufactured using the LPE, MOCVD, and molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) technologies (51). The short wavelength devices are used for compact disc (CD) players, whereas the long wavelength devices, mostly processed by MBE, are used in the communication field and in quantum well stmctures. [Pg.164]

The flow patterns for single phase, Newtonian and non-Newtonian liquids in tanks agitated by various types of impeller have been repotted in the literature.1 3 27 38 39) The experimental techniques which have been employed include the introduction of tracer liquids, neutrally buoyant particles or hydrogen bubbles, and measurement of local velocities by means of Pitot tubes, laser-doppler anemometers, and so on. The salient features of the flow patterns encountered with propellers and disc turbines are shown in Figures 7.9 and 7.10. [Pg.294]

C60 has been used to produce solvent-cast and LB films with interesting photoelec-trochemical behavior. A study of solvent-cast films of C60 on Pt rotating disc electrodes (RDEs) under various illumination conditions was reported [284]. Iodide was used as the solution-phase rednctant. The open-circuit potential shifted by 74 mV per decade of illumination intensity from a continuous wave (cw) argon-ion laser. The photocurrent versus power was measured at -0.26 V under chopped illumination (14-Hz frequency, vs. SCE) up to 30 mW cm and was close to linear. The photoexcitation spectrum (photocurrent versus wavelength) was measured at 0.02 V (vs. SCE) from 400 to 800 mn and found to be... [Pg.110]

One application of modem solid-state electronic devices is semiconductor materials that convert electrical energy into light. These light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are used for visual displays and solid-state lasers. Many indicator lights are LEDs, and diode lasers read compact discs in a CD player. The field of diode lasers is expanding particularly rapidly, driven by such applications as fiber optic telephone transmission. [Pg.730]

There are two detection sensitivities that are of interest for characterizing the BioCD performance. The first is a metrology sensitivity that includes experimental noise sources such as the laser intensity fluctuations and detector noise, but does not include variability of the protein spots on the disc. The second detection sensitivity is under actual assay conditions in which antibody spot variability plays a dominant role. For both of these sensitivities, it is important to define a scale-free sensitivity that is an intrinsic property of the detection platform. [Pg.308]
