The magnetic pole in Antarctica was eventually discovered in 1909 by T.W. Edgeworth David at 72°025 S and 115°16 E in the interior of the continent behind the mountains of Victoria Land. David was a member of the so-called Nimrod Expedition of 1907-1909 that was led by Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922). Since its discovery in 1909, the magnetic pole in Antarctica has moved 900 km to its present position at 65°S and 139°E in the Indian Ocean off the Adelie Coast of East Antarctica (Stonehouse 2002, p. 169). However, nearly 50 years elapsed before the map of the magnetic field in Antarctica was completed during the International Geophysical Year that lasted from 1957-1958 (Victor 1964). [Pg.7]

David McCauley began his new fife with the purchase of 480A in the Wolf River Township of Doniphan County, Kansas. The McCauley family still owns and operates a family farm on some of that land, plus several thousand more acres added over the years. The McCauley farm began producing com as its major commodity in the late 1800s and has continued to pioneer com production into the 21st century. [Pg.542]

R. David Britt of the University of California, Davis, asked about the limits to purely biological approaches. Thomas Moore said he thinks natural photosynthesis needs to be reengineered to double or triple its power of conversion efficiency. He said that solar will ultimately solve the problem. Moore then called for research focused on fuels by photosynthesis created by cyanobacteria grown on nonarable land and photovoltaics for electricity. [Pg.42]

HPDP explicitly incorporates, in the case of the Cherry Point herring, these levels of scale and grain size that are critical to consider in a risk or retrospective assessment (Figure 2.6). A framework that applies the components of HPDP immediately places an endpoint or assessment endpoint into an ecologically relevant contextual framework including spatial scale, grain size, and temporal relationships. Wu and David (2002) have demonstrated that the HPDP framework can also incorporate anthropogenic features such as land use boundaries, roads, and urbanization. [Pg.28]
