Label paste

The term "labeling and packaging materials" used in this ordinance means containers, wrappers and package inserts of a product, and labels pasted on the containers and wrappers. [Pg.453]

Historically, several adhesives have been derived from natural carbohydrate polymers. In a few cases, such polymers have been utilized because of their own particular adhesive properties. However, natural carbohydrate polymers are usually used as modifiers for more costly synthetic resins, especially as thickeners, colloidal stabilizers, and flow controllers. Adhesive uses for natural gums include pressure-sensitive tape, denture adhesives, pharmaceutical tablet binders, household products, and label pastes [17]. [Pg.505]

Ice water label paste is a very specialized water-based casein adhesive which is used primarily to adhere paper labels to beer bottles. The labels must remain attached if the bottles are chilled in ice or otherwise subjected to wet conditions, but they must wash off reusable bottles easily with hot water. Casein is dispersed with urea at an approximate 50 50 ratio in the presence of ammonium hydroxide as an additional dispersant. The high percent casein solids in this type formulation is possible because of the urea, which acts as a viscosity reducer. The urea, sometimes along with ammonium thiocyanate, functions also as a gel depressant. Zinc oxide and zinc acetate are used to crosslink and provide water resistance. A defoamer and a preservative are always included. Starch is one of several agents incorporated to shorten the thread of the adhesive to improve its performance on high speed labelling machines. [Pg.144]

Specifications for viscosity, speed of set, and water resistance vary with the consumer. Table 9 gives the typical ranges for the properties desired in a label paste. [Pg.144]

Application of NMR spectroscopy to heterocyclic chemistry has developed very rapidly during the past 15 years, and the technique is now used almost as routinely as H NMR spectroscopy. There are four main areas of application of interest to the heterocyclic chemist (i) elucidation of structure, where the method can be particularly valuable for complex natural products such as alkaloids and carbohydrate antibiotics (ii) stereochemical studies, especially conformational analysis of saturated heterocyclic systems (iii) the correlation of various theoretical aspects of structure and electronic distribution with chemical shifts, coupling constants and other NMR derived parameters and (iv) the unravelling of biosynthetic pathways to natural products, where, in contrast to related studies with " C-labelled precursors, stepwise degradation of the secondary metabolite is usually unnecessary. [Pg.11]

Probably the most important development of the past decade was the introduction by Brown and co-workers of a set of substituent constants,ct+, derived from the solvolysis of cumyl chlorides and presumably applicable to reaction series in which a delocalization of a positive charge from the reaction site into the aromatic nucleus is important in the transition state or, in other words, where the importance of resonance structures placing a positive charge on the substituent - -M effect) changes substantially between the initial and transition (or final) states. These ct+-values have found wide application, not only in the particular side-chain reactions for which they were designed, but equally in electrophilic nuclear substitution reactions. Although such a scale was first proposed by Pearson et al. under the label of and by Deno et Brown s systematic work made the scale definitive. [Pg.211]

Epinephrine is an inherently unstable chemical in aqueous solution, even at a low pH and in the presence of an antioxidant such as sodium metabisulfite, up to 1 mg/ ml. With the passage of time, the epinephrine dose gradually decreases due to degradation into inactive compounds. If the expiry date has passed, the epinephrine dose correlates inversely with the number of months or years past that date, and will likely be lower than the dose stated on the label even if the solution appears clear and colorless. Nevertheless, if this is the only source of epinephrine available for injection, it should be used in preference to not administering epinephrine at all [32]. [Pg.217]

Homogeneous electrochemical enzyme immunoassays for both phenytoin and digoxin have been developed. In both cases the label was glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, which catalyzes the reduction of NAD to NADH. The NADH produced was detected by LCEC at a carbon paste electrode. [Pg.34]
