Kraft pulping process pollution

When chlorine dioxide is used for pulp bleaching in conjunction with the Kraft (sulfide) process for chemical pulping, by-product sodium sulfate can be used as a source of makeup sulfur and sodium consumed in the chemical cycle. The demand for sodium and sulfur in pulp bleaching is related to the loss of these chemicals through carryover in unbleached pulp. As process improvements have sought to reduce pollution from pulp mills, less sodium sulfate makeup is required. The trends in pulp bleaching to increase substitution of chlorine with chlorine dioxide have caused an oversupply of sodium sulfate, so that this by-product is often regarded as waste (81). [Pg.484]

Sulfite paper has a relatively short life span, since residual acid will continue to hydrolyze the cellulose and cause embrittlement. Further sources of acid include aluminum sulfate (which is added together with resin to suppress bleeding or feathering of ink into the paper) and S02 and NO from the atmosphere. Much of the world s library collections and archives will soon be lost as the paper crumbles. Various deacidification treatments (e.g., with ammonia, morpholine, cyclohexylamine carbamate, or diethyl-zinc) have been proposed and tried, but at best they can only halt the process of embrittlement and cannot reverse it.14 With the move to kraft pulping, alkaline peroxide bleaching, and increasing use of precipitated calcium carbonate as a filler, the high quality papers produced today are intrinsically acid free and should also resist subsequent acidification by S02-polluted air fairly well. [Pg.200]

Paper mills using Kraft s process, in which certain types of wood are pulped in digesters with a strong solution of sodium hydroxide, sodium sulphate and sodium sulphide, contribute MeSH, DMS, and DMDS (Sivela and Sundman, 1975) to environmental pollution. [Pg.408]

A high yield chemical pulp, eg, 52—53% bleached yield from softwoods, can be obtained, but strength properties ate inferior to those obtained from the kraft process. If a protector, eg, potassium iodide, is added, an additional 2—3% yield is obtained, as is an improvement in all strength properties. The gas penetration problem can be minimized if ftbetization is accompHshed before treatment with oxygen. Oxygen treatment of virtually all types of semichemical and mechanical pulps has been explored (55). Caustic, sodium bicarbonate, and sodium carbonate have been used as the source of base (56,57). In all cases, the replacement of the kraft by these other processes has not been justified over the alternative of pollution abatement procedures. [Pg.271]

S oda—Anthraquinone. A few mills worldwide use soda pulping of hardwoods. In such cases, the addition of anthraquinone is immediately justifiable in terms of increased yield and upgraded pulp quaHty. The conversion of existing kraft mills is not as simple because AQ contributes no alkalinity to the process as sulfide does, and most kraft causticizing systems would have to be expanded by about 33%. This conversion is probably not justifiable in terms of the yield gain. The greatest benefit from AQ is for new mills in which expenditures for air pollution abatement devices can be reduced. [Pg.271]
