Domain knowledge

The next few steps are very similar to those required in any software project. One of the first stages is the clear definition of the knowledge domain. It must be clear which problems the expert system must solve. It is at this stage not the intention to define how this can be done. Clarity and specificity must be the major guides here. Fuzziness at this stage will, more than in classical software projects, have to be paid for later when different interpretations cause misunderstandings. Equally important is the clear definition of the end user(s). An expert system set up as decision support tool for professionals is totally different from an expert system that can be used as a training support for less professional people. 

After the knowledge domain, the end users and the experts have been defined, a choice must be made for the software environment for the development of the expert system. In addition, the hardware for the development process as well as for the delivery system must be identified. Real application expert systems always require at least a mid-sized tool (see Section 43.7). 

The knowledge domain is an area within what is usually a much broader problem domain.

The extent and complexity of meanings we hold in any domain are dependent on the quality and quantity of meaningful learning we have pursued in that knowledge domain. In turn, the quantity and quality of the knowledge structures we build will determine our ability to transfer this knowledge for use in new contexts. 

The data set should have information on the whole range of values of the knowledge domain to be studied (e.g. the cultivars of a vegetable oil).

Overall, systemic diagrams can become very complex as shown in Fig. 6, which covers the essential chemistry of alkyl halides. The SATL approach requires that the teacher produces the final systemic diagram (e.g.. Fig. 6) and breaks it up into the smaller systemic diagrams (e.g.. Fig. 5). In doing so, the teacher s view of the knowledge domain is revealed to him/herself as well as eventually to the students. The textbooks present chemistry subject matter with plenty of useful and colourful illustrations and exemplars in simple English appropriate to the level. Each chapter lists what a student would learn about in it. Most of these learn abouts and learning outcomes are addressed at knowledge level. The content is summarised under the heading points to remember at the end of each chapter. Once again the emphasis is on the objectives of knowledge domain. 

Research covers the knowledge domain of scientific or technical investigations and the analysis of their outcomes.

As far as the area of knowledge Is concerned, AI software should be developed by first defining the knowledge domain of the particular problem addressed. Thus, the domain of the program DENDRAL is the structural elucidation of organic compounds, while that of the program MYCIN Is the medical diagnosis... 

Knowledge manipulation, as important as the definition of the knowledge domain, Is implemented by a rule interpreter consisting of three parts, namely a pattern matcher prompting the rules to be applied in each situation, a filter determining which rule of several possible Is to be applied and an executor eventually applying the rule.
