This example, while being of a fairly typical ilk for patents dealing with organic chemistry subject material, is somewhat straightforward in the sense that a fairly clear definition for the claimed Markush was available in the specification. Often, however, the specification does not provide such a clear definition, and one needs to look for clues through the context in which the term is used. The textbooks present chemistry subject matter with plenty of useful and colourful illustrations and exemplars in simple English appropriate to the level. Each chapter lists what a student would learn about in it. Most of these learn abouts and learning outcomes are addressed at knowledge level. The content is summarised under the heading points to remember at the end of each chapter. Once again the emphasis is on the objectives of knowledge domain. 

The text largely contains fundamental material and focuses on understanding the basic principles rather than learning factual information. Since it is impossible to include all branches of surface science in such an introductory book because of its wide and multidisciplinary scope, a specific and narrow topic, the interfacial interactions between solids and liquids, has been chosen for this book. For this reason, the ionic interactions, charged polymers, electrochemistry, electrokinetics and the colloid and particulate sciences cannot be included. Some fundamental physical chemistry subjects such as basic thermodynamics are covered, and many equations are derived from these basic concepts throughout the book in order to show the links between applied surface equations and the fundamental concepts. This is lacking in most textbooks and applied books in surface chemistry, and for this reason, this book can be used as a textbook for a course of 14-15 weeks. 

This book follows the California numbering system for labeling all chemistry Subject Matter Requirement (SMR) Domains. Domains 1 through 7 in this section are refered to as Chemistry Domains. Domains 11 and 12 in the following section are refered to as General Chemistry Domains enumerated within the broader scope of general science. 

There has been much discussion about the validity of emergency response personnel studying chemistry. Obviously, from the title of this book, the author s opinion is clear however, the chemistry presented here is more street chemistry than college chemistry. 1 have tried to make the chemistry subject matter appropriate for response personnel and to express the information in understandable terms.

Another example of an instrument designed to measure students views on science-technology-society was reviewed by Osborne, Simon, and Collins (2003). The instrument was developed by Aikenhead Ryan (1992) and is often seen as offering greater validity than others. It has been adapted most recently by Beimett (2001) to determine undergraduates views of chemistry and develop profiles of students who held positive and negative views of the chemistry subject.
