Kinship

These last three theoretical methods have no real kinship to any of the major categories or precursors. The first is the one that has caused Strike more despair than any other. It was once a Top Ten recipe in the first edition. But it was a reckless gamble on Strike s part and Strike paid for it. Here is what Strike wrote last year... [Pg.193]

There is a close kinship between the chemical process industry and the nuclear electric power industry. In tact once the physics of nuclear reaction was established the rest is chemistiy and hc.it ii an.sfer. The word "reactor" is from chemistry for the location the reaction takes place.. nuclear reactor consists of a vessel in which a nuclear reaction heats water to make steam to drive a turbine o generate electricity. Thus the primary components are pipes, valves, pumps heat exchangers, and water purifiers similar to the components found in a chemical plant. Following the success of WASH-1400, PSA was used to analyze the chemical proce.ssmg of nuclear fuel and. aste preparation for disposal. [Pg.540]

Of course it is important to distinguish between the shape of the periodic table, which is admittedly a matter of choice or convention, from tables that actually place certain elements in different groups. The point is not whether one should favor a tabular form, in which periods end abruptly, over circular displays which emphasize the continuity of the sequence of the elements for example. The question is rather whether to favor a table that places the element helium among the noble gases, when compared with tables that place this element among the alkaline earths. The wider question is whether elemental classification is an objective matter of fact or whether it is a matter of convention. It is the question of whether helium, for example, has a natural kinship with the noble gases or with the alkaline earths. Or as philosophers of science are apt to say, it is the question of whether or not groups, or families of elements, represent natural kinds. [Pg.133]

Special mention must be accorded to iatrogenic effects, where the usefulness of novel synthetic drugs is impaired by untoward side effects of obscure etiology. In some, if not many of them, these side effects may find their explanation in the inhibitory action of the drug upon a vitamin, as in the case of primidone vs. folic acid (B3a). These relationships appear to be fortuitous until the structural chemical kinship of drug and vitamin is recognized. [Pg.238]

Terri was a stranger to her Indian heritage in her youth. While visiting a pueblo for the first time as a young adult, she felt a kinship with the Indians, which she could not express. Today her Indian roots shape her life and soul, providing her with healing rituals that help her to cope with her illness. She is an internationally known investigative reporter of chemical injury in the Native American community. [Pg.200]

The study of human remains has long been the most direct method of understanding the detailed lives of our ancestors as individuals. The methods of forensic science and palaeopathology have been applied for many years to determine age, sex, stature, nutritional status and cause of death, and to detect evidence of some diseases. Increasingly, DNA is being used to determine kinship. It is, however, no exaggeration to say that entire new vistas have been... [Pg.372]

The model fitting for this data was based on an analysis of multiple kinships gathered from the entire world literature by Loehlin (1992). His analysis required both additive and non additive variance and we allowed for them in our model. Our results mirrored... [Pg.129]

The results are remarkably similar given that two kinship groups and two different instruments were used. They are also very much like the personality results in general. [Pg.133]

We tend to think of race as being indisputable, real It frames our notions of kinship and descent and influences our movements in the social world we see it plainly on one another s faces. It seems a product not of the social imagination but of biology. Like some mid-century liberals who saw race as a myth or a superstition, however, scholars in several disciplines have recently shaken faith in this biological certainty. The conventions by which race mixing is understood, they point out, is one site where the unreality of race comes into view. Why is it that in the United... [Pg.10]
