By the mid 1930 s over 80% of the world s citric add was produced by fermentation. At present virtually all of the world production comes from this process. By 1981 over 200,000 tonnes were produced annually (possibly as high as 300,000 tonnes) the industry in the United Kingdom at that time being worth some 20 million per annum, one tenth of the world s turnover. 

But if a man, having the gold of truth, lazily hoards it, too idle to seek to put it out to interest, or from any other motive misuses it, then is that man rich in knowledge but poor in love to his fellowman and thus intellectually despising him, he will find it hard to enter into the kingdom, and regeneration will not come near him.

For each sea the contribution of various emission sources to atmospheric depositions was assessed. It is obvious that the countries with high emissions, located close to the seas, make the highest contributions to anthropogenic depositions. For example, the most significant contribution to the North Sea comes from the United Kingdom (28%) and Germany (16%). The main anthropogenic contributor to the Caspian Sea is Russia (46%), followed by Azerbaijan (22%) and Turkey (12%). Similar information is also available for cadmium and mercury. 

After 1960, many new isolations of these bases were reported, much chemistry and biology has been added to the original body, and about 80 new alkaloids from the vegetable and animal kingdoms have joined the list. These are the reasons why it was felt that the time had come to update the preceding reviews. 

The concept of a safety case comes from the requirements of the European Union/European Community (EU/EC) Seveso Directive (82/501/EC) and, in particular, regulations that the United Kingdom and other member states used to implement that directive. United Kingdom regulations (Control of Industrial Major Accident Hazards [CIMAH], 1984 replaced by Control of Major Accident Hazards Involving Dangerous Substances [COMAH] in 1999) require that major hazardous facilities produce a safety report or safety case.64 The requirement for a safety case is initiated by a list of chemicals and a class of flammables. Like the hazard analysis approach (Section 8.1.2), experts identify the reactive hazards of the process if analysis shows that the proposed process is safe, it may be excluded from additional regulatory requirements.
