It has been well known for a long time that some reactions taking place at a very slow rate may be markedly accelerated by the simultaneous occurrence of another reaction of measurable velocity. On the suggestion of Kessler this phenomenon is called chemical induction and it is said that the reaction of measurable velocity induces the other slow reaction. [Pg.510]

An excellent description of the engineering side of both topics is provided by Kessler and Klein [in Ho and Sirkar (eds.), op. cit., pp. 163-216]. A comprehensive treatment of diffusion appears in Von Halle and Shachter, "Diffusional Separation Methods, in Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology, pp. 149-203, Wiley, 1993. [Pg.36]

Biomacromolecules and biopolymers have also been put to use as templates for the synthesis of new materials, or models for the study of molecular mechanisms in nature. Exanq>Ies are nucleic acid synthetic alternatives (Eschenmoser 1999), P- and y-peptide synthetic analoguesofnatural a-peptides (Seebach 2001), and analogues ofpoly-(i )-3-hydroxybutanoic acid. The latter can be obtained from chemical synthesis (Seebach 2001) or the culture of engineered Pseudomonas strains (Kessler 2001). [Pg.218]

This shows that the luminescence intensity decreases as a function of [Q] (Q is called a luminescence inhibitor or quencher ), in parallel to the lifetime variation no additional information is obtained by measurement of I as compared to lifetime measurements. In particular, the emission spectrum of M is not distorted (no spectral shift) when Q is added to the solution. The exact chemical nature of Z cannot be deduced from the luminescence measurement of M because the spectroscopic characteristics of Z do not appear in eqs. (15)—(18). Finally, it should be noted that, strictly speaking, the term luminescence inhibition and the Stern-Volmer equation should apply solely to experiments for which both the lifetime and the luminescence intensity decrease in parallel as a function of the concentration of a quencher . Finally, note that Stern-Volmer constants having a negative value have no physical meaning (Kessler, 1998). [Pg.486]

The fact that mesonic X-ray intensity patterns are sometimes dependent on chemical environments is an interesting topic in mesonic chemistry. When the relative line intensities of mesonic X-rays are considered in such cases, systematic differences are found between different compounds of the same element. The chemical effect on muonic X-ray patterns was first discovered by Zinov et al. and by Kessler et al. [Pg.20]
