Chemical Engineering Graduates

When Jerry graduated, he went to work for a paper mill in the southeastern part of the country. He is a process engineer. He works in a technical group comprised of six engineers. Their joh is to get as much production as possible out of the mill. Projects are assigned individually, and he is responsible for his tasks. The company has only one mill, and therefore there is no travel associated with his job. He t5rpically works 40 hours per week. Jerry likes his job and plans to stick with it. For recreation, he is an avid tennis player. 

Harry is a sales engineer for a large chemical company that manufactures a large array of chemicals. He spends many hours on the road. Harry may spend as much as a month at a customer s location, running tests and trials in order to sell his product. He normally takes some technical support with him in the form of two other engineers. He typically works about 60 hours per week. He hopes to either move up in the management of his company or start his own business. In his spare time, he likes to play bridge.

The data in Figure 5.1 show the number of chemical engineering graduates by degree and by year. 

It is true to say that the selection of suitable mathematical models has involved a clear physical understanding of the processes involved and so can be viewed as the province of the chemical engineer it is also true that progress would have been more rapid if the actual mathematical and computational analyses had been carried out by experts, rather than by chemical engineering graduate students or postdoctoral workers.

As the field of process control has matured over the last 30 years, it has become one of the core areas in chemical engineering along with thermodynamics, heat transfer, mass transfer, fluid mechanics, and reactor kinetics. Any chemical engineering, graduate should have some knowledge not only of these traditional areas but also of the fundamentals of process control. For those of us who have been part of this period of development, the attainment of parity with the traditional areas has been long overdue.
