Juniperus Oxycedrus

In another study carried out by Biers et al (1994), the residual contents of intact Corinthian plastic vases of the 7-6th Centuries BC were analysed nondestructive by pouring solvent into the vessels and decanting. A large number of mono-, sesqui- and diterpenoids were identified in the solvent washes. The diterpenoid, manoyl oxide [Structure 7.15] was identified in 16 vases. This molecule is found in the bark of Pinus and Abies spp. and in the essential oils of the Cupressaceae family including Juniperus oxycedrus. [Pg.243]

Some new diterpenoid oxides have been obtained from Eupatorium jhanii. They are jhanol (12) and its 18-acetate together with jhanidiol (13) and its 18-monoacetate and diacetate. Their structures were established by correlation with manoyl oxide and by an examination of their C n.m.r. spectra. 11/3-Hydro-xymanoyl oxide (14) has been isolated from Juniperus oxycedrus ° A group of new 11-oxomanoyl oxide derivatives (15a—e) has been obtained from Coleus forskohlii (Labiatae). Their oxygenation pattern is reminiscent of that of the tricyclic diterpenoids which have beemobtained from other Coleus species. [Pg.125]

Cadinene is a trivial name of a number of isomers which occur in a wide variety of essential oils e.g. cubeb oil. Actually, it is derived from the Cade juniper Juniperus oxycedrus L.). The cadalane (4-isopropyl-1,6-dimethyldecahydro-naphthalene) carbon skeleton is the base. Prominent stereochemical isomers are a-cadinene 79, y-cadinene 80 and d-cadinene 81 (Structure 4.23). The source of cade oil is Juniperus oxycedrus or prickly cedar, a shrub or small tree native to the Mediterranean region, which grows up to about 4 m in height. The volatile oil (cade oil) is obtained by destructive distillation of the branches and wood, usually in the form of shavings or chips. The resultant distillate separates into three layers of which the uppermost dark brown viscous layer is cade oil. Rectified cade oil (the vapor of juniper tar) is obtained by steam or vacuum distillation of crude cade oil. [Pg.123]
