Changes in the ultrastructure of ancient Juniperus phoenicea were apparent, although the macroscopic structure was intact (8). The most typical change was separation of the inner layer in the wood cell walls (S2) from the outer layer and the primary cell walls (Si-P). The microfibrils in Sj were loosened and wavy. Fracture studies indicated failures in the middle lamella region. Large amounts of phenolic substance were observed in the parenchyma cells. [Pg.69]
