Johnson Act

Country of Origin Current law Senate bill (1910 census) Johnson Act (1890 census)... [Pg.93]

Stoddard s own refiguring of non-Nordics as fellow Caucasians became clearer still in Re forging America (1927). Once the Johnson Act had been passed, even so alarmist a thinker as Stoddard could take heart and reconsider the stakes of the non-Nordic presence. He remained optimistic despite the serious consequences produced by [the new ] immigration, ... [Pg.106]

The book has been edited by B.P. WHIM, with P.G. JOHNSON acting as co-editor for Part 2. The editors acknowledge with thanks the contributions of the various authors and the solvent suppliers who provided information on their products. They also wish to thank the staff of ICI CHLOR CHEMICALS for their help and advice—particularly Geoff Weemes and Graham Howe. [Pg.621]

The achiral triene chain of (a//-rrans-)-3-demethyl-famesic ester as well as its (6-cis-)-isoiner cyclize in the presence of acids to give the decalol derivative with four chirai centres whose relative configuration is well defined (P.A. Stadler, 1957 A. Escherunoser, 1959 W.S. Johnson, 1968, 1976). A monocyclic diene is formed as an intermediate (G. Stork, 1955). With more complicated 1,5-polyenes, such as squalene, oily mixtures of various cycliz-ation products are obtained. The 18,19-glycol of squalene 2,3-oxide, however, cyclized in modest yield with picric acid catalysis to give a complex tetracyclic natural product with nine chiral centres. Picric acid acts as a protic acid of medium strength whose conjugated base is non-nucleophilic. Such acids activate oxygen functions selectively (K.B. Sharpless, 1970). [Pg.91]

Pressure at the pulsing device and the conditions for cavitation and water hammer may be estimated by the methods of Wilhams and Little [Trans. Jnst. Chem. Eng. (London), 32, 174 (1954)] provided the pressure-drop characteristics of the tower internals are known. Jealous and Johnson (loc. cit) have had good success in computing the power required for pulsing. Since power requirement alternates, the use of a flywheel on the pulse mechanism to act as an energy reservoir is suggested as a means of reducing power requirements. Alterna-... [Pg.1488]

In the above analysis, Johnson et al. [6] assume that the interfacial forces act only when the surfaces are in contact, i.e. the attractive forces are considered to be of infinitesimally short range. This analysis ignores the forces acting just outside the edge of the contact circle. Because of this, the theory predicts an infinite tensile stress at the edge of the contact. If the attractive force between the surfaces is allowed to have a finite range, the infinity in the tensile stress disappears. The stress at the edge of the contact circle is still tensile, but it remains finite. [Pg.86]

PCP is used by persons who tend to be multiple drug users. PCP is one of the more common drugs found in arrestee populations, although its prevalence varies considerably by jurisdiction. An unknown, but probably very small percentage of users suffer extreme PCP-induced intoxication and disorientation and commit bizarre, often violent acts. Much more research is needed to identify the extent of these problems in users, and to learn how personality, other drug use, and the quality and quantity of PCP ingested contribute to the occurrence of violent behavior. Spontaneous hydrolysis of many activated derivatives of carboxylic or carbonic acids involves nucleophilic addition of water to the carbonyl group, assisted by another water molecule which acts as a general base (Johnson, 1967 Mengerand Venkatasubban, 1976). The tetrahedral intermediate then rapidly goes forward to products (Scheme 3). [Pg.245]
