Cartridge collectors perform very effectively in many different applications. Common applications of cartridge filter systems with pulse jet cleaning are comparable to baghouses described earlier. In addition to these applications, cartridge collectors can be used in any process where dust is generated and can be collected and ducted to a central location.

Pulse-jet cleaning (above) uses a controlled blast of compressed air from the primary into the secondary nozzle, which is magnified by induced air being drawn into the bag. The sudden release of air causes the bag to expand fully, throwing the dust from the outer surface. Dislodged dust falls into the collection hopper. At right, types of duty cycles... 

When a hole has been bored from top to bottom of the coke bed, the boring tool is removed. It is replaced by cutting nozzles that are horizontal, so that the water jets penetrate and cut the coke bed. The nozzles are offset so the reaction rotates the nozzle assembly. The jets cut the coke bed into layers as the revolving jets move through the bed. The coke breaks away and falls to the bottom of the chamber. The diameter of the effective cutting stream is about 1.75 inches at a distance of 8 feet from the nozzle. The jets clean all of the coke from the chamber, so that it is not necessary for a man to enter the chamber at all. The prerequisite of the successful application of water-jet cleaning should be a proper understanding of the parameters involved in the jet-cleaning physics requiring profound case studies. 

Liquid CO2 has a lower density than the liquid organic solvents normally used in conventional dry-cleaning processes, as shown in Table 9.11-1. Moreover, its viscosity is one order of magnitude lower than organic solvents. As a consequence, the jet-cleaning agitation seems to offer the more feasible approach for C02 dry-cleaning machines.

There are several types of dressing tools other than diamond dressers. Jet cleaning [30] is one of the dressing methods in which high-pressure water and/ or gas will be adopted in order to remove slurries or other residual contaminants. 

The backwash system used by Zum, for instance, employs two header pipes one operates continuously at 20 psi, while the other operates at 40-55 psi. Under normal operating conditions, these jets operate at 35 psi. Once a day they are operated at 50 psi for 30 min to keep the jets free of slime buildup. Should this procedure fail to keep the jets clean, the pressure is raised to 55 psi. At this pressure the spring-loaded jet mouth widens to allow for more effective cleaning.
