The venues of the symposia have provided unique opportunities to visit scenic and cultural sites throughout the world. These sites have included the national parks in Utah cathedrals and palaces in Europe, Korea, and Japan dinner cmises on the Inland Sea from Hiroshima to Miyajima and on the canals of the Netherlands the Edinburgh Tattoo at Edinburgh Castle historic sites in Jerusalem beautiful beaches of Hawaii Jean-Marie Lehn presenting an organ recital in the Sheffield cathedral the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, and ancient Tuscany villages in Italy. The designation of the Director for External Relations as the focal point for universality within the Secretariat and an invitation to States Parties to designate voluntary and informal points of contact (POCs) in all regions and sub-regions relevant for the effective promotion of universality were of particular importance for the implementation of the Action Plan, which was well under way by early 2004. Several POCs have been nominated, by Bulgaria, Chile, China, Iran, Jamaica, Japan, Mexico, Oman, Palau, Poland, the Republic of Korea, the Russian Federation, the Slovak Republic, South Africa, Tajikistan, the United Kingdom, the United States of America and the State Party holding the presidency of the European Union. The Secretariat continues to work with these POCs and other interested States Parties to promote universahty of the CWC. [Pg.154]

To include also vendors, resources, and services in countries that are less well known in the western hemisphere, particularly Russia and the former Eastern Block countries, China and the countries of the Far East, India, the Near East, Africa, and South America, technical and trade organizations were contacted and asked to provide lists of vendors and specialists working in the field. Unfortunately, again, most did not even respond so that information was exclusively gleaned from a few freely available brochures and publications. It was most disappointing to the author that, with his limited possibilities and the language as well as accessibility problems in other continents, it was virtually impossible to adequately research and cover the undoubtedly vast resources of the Eastern countries (particularly Russia, China, and the Far East, excluding Japan). [Pg.544]

Mihama-3 is an 826 MW Mitsubishi-built pressurized water reactor (PWR) plant situated in Mihama, Japan, 320 km west of Tokyo. The carbon steel pipe carried the high-temperature steam at high pressure and the pipe was not inspected since the inception of the plant in 1976. In April 2003, Nihon Arm, a maintenance subconttac-tor informed Kansai Electric Power Company, the plant owner, that there could be a problem. Then the power company scheduled an ultrasonic inspection for August 2004. Four days before the scheduled inspection, superheated steam blew the 60-cm wide hole in the pipe. The steam that escaped was not in contact with the nuclear reactor and hence no nuclear contamination has been reported. [Pg.386]
