Catalyst preparation and inspection by microscopy. Preparation by impregnation with ammonium iron citrate and iron nitrate resulted in a homogeneous iron distribution as determined by light microscopy. Ammonium iron EDTA as a precursor yielded an eggshell distribution of the iron compound. Finely divided material deposited on the support was observed with Transmission Electron Microscopy in all catalysts. Tn addition to this, some material deposited next to the support was observed in catalysts ex nitrate. It was therefore decided to focus on the catalysts prepared with ammonium Fe(ITI) citrate.

Hydrothermal treatment of unstirred samples consistently resulted in larger second phase particles than did the same treatment of stirred samples. This is probably due to a combination of two contributing factors a less homogeneous iron distribution in the as-synthesized form of the unstirred samples and enhanced diffusion during steam treatments. The latter is probably due to the voids decreasing the impedence to the movement of iron species. 

Differences in gasification rates are due to the heterogeneous pore structure and the inhomogeneous iron distribution in the coal matrix.

Haemosiderosis (HS) denotes iron storage in the organism, whereby iron deposition in the liver is < 0.5 g/100 g liver WW. Iron deposition occurs almost exclusively in the RES parenchymal cells are rarely affected. The similarity (89,152) between the chemical properties of AP+ and Fe explains why aluminum can be taken up and distributed in animals it uses the iron distribution pathway. However, aluminum is unlikely to replace iron in many, if any, of its functional sites. Thus, for example, AF+ has not been found in significant amounts in heme. The damaging effects of AP appear to arise because, once mobilized within the body, it can replace Mg + and Ca (83, 89), and also because insoluble aluminum-containing materials are formed. Thus aluminum toxicity is probably not directly related to iron biochemistry.
