An important inventory control loop in this overall process is the bottom level of the entrainer recovery column. The control of this level was suggested by Grassi ° and Luyben to be held by the entrainer makeup flow. However, because this flow is very small, the bottom level essentially floats as changes in the entrainer flowrate occur. Emission Rate Algorithms. In order to compile a natural emissions inventory, emission rate functions must be determined for the sources included in the inventory. The emission rate for a specific source will vary depending upon certain environmental conditions. Analyses of sulfur emission measurements collected by Adams et al. (2) and later studies (21.22) suggest that temperature plays an important role in determining sulfur flux. While the mechanisms controlling the release of natural sulfur emissions are not well understood, field observations have demonstrated characteristic trends in temperature-flux patterns. Sulfur emissions tend to increase logarithmically with increasing temperature for normal ambient temperatures (10°C to 35°C). [Pg.16]

In contrast to open formularies, closed formularies are strictly controlled. Only certain agents are available and strict therapeutic substitution with the most recognized agent within a pharmacological class is standard procedure. The purpose of this type of formulary is to assure availability of all needed products at the least cost of inventory investment. USA had been underestimated by a factor of 4 (Geron et al., 1994). This discovery led to a major change in model predictions for the impact of NOjc and VOCs on ozone formation in the eastern USA (Pierce et al., 1998 see also Chameides et al., 1988) and led to greater emphasis on the control of NO c emission sources. Recent results from the Texas Air Quality study also suggest that emissions of anthropogenic VOC from industrial sources are much larger than represented in emission inventories. Even when an attempt is made to control variables in the manner proposed above, there will still be local variability that cannot be encompassed if sampling is restricted to a few soil pits. Liski (1996) has suggested, for a boreal forest on a sandy substrate in Finland, that a minimum of 30 samples are required for a 10% confidence interval on the mean value obtained for the carbon inventory, and the number of samples required is likely to be higher than this for more heterogeneous tree-grass ecosystems. Carter et al. (1998) found that 15 random soil samples were required from 1° X 1° grid cells in Queensland (Australia) to define the average SOC content of a cell to within 10% of the true mean, while about 40 samples were required for an estimate to within 5% of the mean. [Pg.193]
