The pharmacist must be alert to the occurrence of falsified medicinal products (counterfeit) and is aware of his role in preventing falsified medicines reaching the patient. Patients should be informed of the dangers of ordering medicinal products through internet sites which have not been validated. 

More and more patients seek advice on complementary medicine via the Internet. It is therefore important to monitor the validity of such advice. In one survey, most of the 13 most popular websites on complementary medicine for cancer recommended cancer therapies for which there was no evidence of efficacy (30). Three of the sites overtly discouraged cancer patients from using conventional therapies. When the study was repeated, this time focussing on HIV instead of cancer, the results were virtually identical (31). These findings were similar to those of another study of 61 popular websites on herbal medicines for cancer (32). Most of these sites were commercial by nature and claimed cancer cures through herbal medicines, with little regard for current regulations.

What we learn from hits on the Internet, is that popular interest in the holistic approach is in marked contrast to the relative lack of interest in the application of holistic principles by mainstream medicine in the United States. Yet holistic, when entered with managed care, gave a significant 154,000 hits, but most sites were pro-holistic and anti-managed care. Still some web pages with large numbers of hits did speak favorably about early efforts to combine the two approaches. On the whole, the most common observations were about the lack of holism in mainstream medicine, the need to restore the holistic approach to mainstream medicine, and the extreme difficulty in doing so. 

Useful web sites are listed at the end of each chapter, to encourage the reader to use the Internet for sources of reliable and respectable up-to-date information about disease, medicines and therapeutics. Although all websites were accessible at the time of writing, their existence cannot be guaranteed in the future.
