Internet fraud

Internet fraud has been widely identified across the global as one of the fastest growing and most pervasive forms of white collar crime. The multicultural and multinational nature of e-business has resulted in diverse views on how the cyberspace should be regulated and how cyber ethics should be enforced. For example, encryption of data transmission over the internet is an effective means of curbing e-business abuses. But many third world countries are still not in favor of this practice. On die other hand, investigation and prosecution of internet abuses usually require cooperation of law enforcement authorities from two or more nations. The lack of cooperation from any one of these nations will make it impossible to prosecute the cyber criminals who will in turn continue to pose threats in the e-business arena. Till the world reaches an agreement on how the cyber space should be regulated, companies with e-business activities from all industries have to contend with cyber ethic issues for many years to come. [Pg.62]

Terrorist exploitation of technology is further enhanced when groups share their technological advances with other groups both formally and informally. As noted above, Samudra aimed his exhortation to use the internet for fraud and money laundering at all jihadists working towards the downfall of the West. [Pg.30]

Because of instances of fraud, the FDA has instituted procedures for the debarment of individuals. An NDA needs to contain a certification that the applicant has not and will not use the services of any debarred individual in any capacity (14). Notices of the debarment of individuals are published in the Federal Register. The current debarment list is available from the FDA internet site or from the Division of Compliance Policy. Note that the certification includes the statement that the applicant will not use any debarred person in the future. Thus, it is recommended that the list be checked periodically, especially before letting any contracts. The FDA has been interpreting the phrase in any capacity to include jobs that are not involved with drug development, such as landscaper or accountant. [Pg.98]

As the dietary supplement industry drastically continues to grow, so does the risk. Possible fraudulent products as well as consumer injury are both widely reported. It is very simple for a consumer to obtain such products of fraud due to advertisements on the internet, TV, and magazines. These articles promote a new product claiming to be a miracle cure , magical , or new discovery , however, if the product was a cure it would already be reported and used by health care professionals. Some promotions claim that the product can cure a wide range of unrelated diseases, but no product can do this. There are even some that claim to be backed by scientific studies, but the references may be inadequate or nonexistent. For instance, if a list of references is... [Pg.840]

Fear that the Internet will be littered with alchemy and not chemistry fear that peer review will be abolished are valid, but mostly unfounded, concerns that many people have voiced. Will Science Publishing Perish is an article which is an extreme example of a red herring. In fact, there is no reason to think that the journals (printed or electronic) of the future will have more or fewer errors, more or less duplication, or more or less manuscripts withdrawn owing to fraud and related misrepresentation. Considering the sad. state of book sales in science and the popularity (and low cost) of (nonpeer-reviewed) technical magazines (many of which are of good and useful quality), not everything publi.shed (and widely read... [Pg.872]
