To help the reader keep abreast of these advances we present a list of useful WWW sites in this appendix. Realistically, this list should be updated on a daily basis as many of the tools offered on the Internet are made available not only by large organizations and research groups but also by individual researchers. The goal, therefore, has not been to provide a nearly complete guide to the WWW but rather to provide material representative of the tools useful to researchers in the fields of biochemistry and biophysics. 

Terrorist exploitation of technology is further enhanced when groups share their technological advances with other groups both formally and informally. As noted above, Samudra aimed his exhortation to use the internet for fraud and money laundering at all jihadists working towards the downfall of the West. 

Mazda and others have been working on advanced safety vehicles with monitor screens to show rear and side views, voice-interactive navigation systems and collision avoidance technology. The Ford 24.7 concept car had a computer console in the dashboard with Internet access that is voice-activated. 

This is an opportunity for you to carry out a piece of Independent research on a topic that interests you. It may be something you have covered in Advanced Higher Chemistry this session, or something that you covered at Higher or earlier years, or it may be a topic you have read about on the internet or from other media sources. You may find that scientific journals such as School Science Review, New Scientist and Scientific American are useful in helping you to choose a topic for your project. 

This final chapter will spotlight some of these areas of research and the potential that they hold. In the future we may be able to grow new hearts to replace damaged ones and monitor ischemia and the progression of the disease via the internet and apply new therapies to arrest adverse remodeling before it leads to the syndrome of heart failure. Most of what will be described here is in the realm of research and application to humans in clinical trials is yet to occur. Despite this, these wonderful advances offer hope to patients for the future.

Sending a student to the library to carry out an old-fashioned book search in order to learn what has been achieved in a particular subject area is generally unpopular, but how else can the subject be appreciated from what might be called a classical perspective The vast majority of new students do not seem to appreciate that there was any science prior to 1990. This is about as far back as most Internet databases can reach so, in effect, the student is denied access to the pioneering work that produced the advances in the first place. 

Thanks to technological advancements, upwards of 70% of all employers now use the Internet or applicant-tracking software for recruitment, which eliminates even more of the person-to-person contact between a company and an applicant during the hiring process. Applicants who understand how today s technology is being used by HR professionals and recruiters are certainly at an advantage. 

This unit will introduce two fundamental protocols—the Wilhelmy plate method (see Basic Protocol 1 and Alternate Protocol 1) and the du Noiiy ring method (see Alternate Protocol 2)—that can be used to determine static interfacial tension (Dukhin et al., 1995). Since the two methods use the same experimental setup, they will be discussed together. Two advanced protocols that have the capability to determine dynamic interfacial tension—the drop volume technique (see Basic Protocol 2) and the drop shape method (see Alternate Protocol 3)—will also be presented. The basic principles of each of these techniques will be briefly outlined in the Background Information. Critical Parameters as well as Time Considerations for the different tests will be discussed. References and Internet Resources are listed to provide a more in-depth understanding of each of these techniques and allow the reader to contact commercial vendors to obtain information about costs and availability of surface science instrumentation.
