Some authors (Hugget, 1995 Torres et al., 1997) have demonstrated that tree species distributions in semideciduous forest are influenced by temperature, precipitation and altitude. Six climatic maps were chosen, corresponding to these three factors (Table 8.2). Today acid rain is much less of a problem then it was 20 years ago in Europe and North America but it is now spreading in industrializing countries in Asia and Latin America (see Section 6.3.3). In order to help prevent acidification in these regions the Regional Acidification Information and Simulation (RAINS) programme has been devised by EU researchers as early warning system for Asian governments.
