A shift rota designed literally around these guidelines, ignoring any context-specific constraints/issues, might look like that shown in Table 9.7. It is a rapidly (forward) rotating schedule of 8-hour shifts.

That said, there are of course best practice guidelines with regard to mentoring schemes. We shall try and disseminate these here and, indeed, throughout this book. However, when choosing an approach to implementing your scheme, you should nevertheless carefully assess what would work best for your organization.

The Best Practice Guideline also reinforced the principle that histopathologic examination of lymphoid tissues as indicators of systemic immunoto-xicity requires that (i) each animal should receive a thorough macroscopic examination of the spleen, thymus, and lymph nodes and (ii) thymus, spleen, draining lymph nodes, bone marrow in situ, and any gross lesions of a lymphoid organ represent the minimum of tissues for routine evaluation of the lymphoid system. 

Enhanced histopathology involves the semiquantitative description of lymphoid tissue changes and is considered central to the Best Practice Guideline for lymphoid tissue microscopic examination. This approach is rooted in the concept that (i) each lymphoid organ has separate compartments that support specific immune functions (ii) these compartments can and should be evaluated individually for changes and (iii) descriptive, rather than interpretative terminology, should be used to characterize changes within these compartments.
