Structure and Nomenclature Search System. This system links the collection of chemical databases found in the Chemical Information System (CIS), one of the first interactive systems for stmcture and substmcture searching. References from the separate files can be retrieved by SANSS using CAS Registry Numbers, and the database of stmctures may be searched for stmctures or substmctures. An adaptation of the SANSS software for substmcture searching has been incorporated in the Dmg Information System of the National Cancer Institute for its own use (54). [Pg.118]

Although the user interface just acts as the messenger for the interpreter, sound and logical design of the interface is crucial in giving the user confidence in the system. The user interface employs a conversational format, so the interpreter and user interface must between them have some knowledge about how information should be presented to humans. In the most effective expert systems, the interactions between software and user take into account the level of expertise of the user. [Pg.216]

Experimental Techniques. Chromatography was performed on a Varian model 5060 HPLC equipped with a RI-3 refractive index detector. A Vista Plus Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) data system was used consisting of a Vista 401 chromatography data system serially connected to an Apple II microcomputer. The Vista 401 performs data acquisition and allows data storage and automations capability while all SEC data processing is performed on the Apple II by means of user-interactive GPC software for automated, on-line calibration and polymer analysis. [Pg.77]

With increasingly networked, distributed computer systems the risk of deliberate malicious interactions, using software-based tools, became a serious threat. Many-fold related issues like data protection, privacy, integrity, authenticity, and denial of service attacks, viruses, worms etc. lead to a separate community to be established, which is nowadays in the main focus of the public as was safety some time ago (and still is—but only after catastrophic events). This community developed separate standards, methods, taxonomy and ways of thinking. [Pg.162]

However, the operating system code itself is composed of processes, and an applications process will certainly require services from the operating system from time to time to carry out input-output operations, at the expiration of a time limit, and so on. Thus, the execution of the applications software code will alternate with the execution of operating systems software code in a way dictated by the needs of the application software for operating system services and through intervention by the user where the application is interactive. [Pg.202]

System software often provides interfaces to be used by other programs (typically application programs) and also interfaces to be used by users (interactively). For example, an operating system may be invoked interactively by a user or by database systems. [Pg.296]

Five categories of interacting system elements can be defined equipment (hardware), software, facilities, personnel, and procedural data. Performance, design, and test requirements must be specified and... [Pg.2350]

Human-Centered Design Processes for Interactive Systems. This standard covers human-centered design activities throughout the lifecycle of computer-based interactive systems. It is aimed at those managing design processes and provides guidance on sources of information and standards relevant to the human-centered approach. This standard is concerned with both hardware and software components of interactive systems. [Pg.253]

Security has always been an important quality factor in many types of interactive systems including banking software such as Multifunction Teller Machines (MTM). Usability also is required in such systems. However, there is also a common (but false) belief that security is only related to the software systems functionality and that it can be designed independently from usability which only relates to the UI component. In fact, the term UI and the way usability is defined are perhaps major underlying obstacles that explain such erroneous conceptions. Indeed, it gives the impression that the UI is a thin layer sitting on top of the real system and that usability can be conceived independently from the other quality factors. [Pg.114]

Currently we have embedded four extensions to standard QOC diagrams in order to support the specific needs for interactive systems engineering task model and scenarios, ergonomic criteria and usability factors, weights to criteria and factors and connection to software architecture models for interactive systems. [Pg.531]
