Interacting with instructors

The major disadvantage of videotaped coursework is the inability to interact directly with the instructor or other classmates. However, most programs currently employ the use of supplemental or web-based interactions with instructors or online small group discussions to overcome, or at least minimize, these deficiencies. Occasionally, poor technical quality may substantially impact course delivery and practitioners considering these programs may want to review sample videotapes or discuss this issue with current students. [Pg.595]

The participants in this study were chemistry, chemical engineering, or physics students in various upper-level classes at Purdue University in which quantum mechanics represents a sizeable portion of the material covered, if not the focus of the entire course. We had prior approval from the instructors to observe their classes and to interact with their students, and from the institution s IRB to do the study. All of the students who participated in the study were volunteers. Students were informed that participation in the study was not a criterion their instructors would use when assigning their grades. Faculty, administrators, and staff were selected based on their knowledge of the departmental culture, specifically the goals and values of the department. Faculty interviews include tenure-track and tenured professors, assistant, associate, and full professors as well as adjunct part-time instructors. Administrators include deans, associate and assistant deans, and 18 staff interviews with academic advisors and office assistants who interact with students on a daily basis. Interview participants signed informed consents and their participation was voluntary. All interviews were audio recorded for transcription and analysis and strict confidentiality was ensured during and after data collection.
