Integrated Systems. Until recently, each of the numerous databases and sources of information available to chemists and technologists had to be searched iadividually, and selected results either ptinted for file storage or downloaded to an ia-house or private computer system for easy future access.

No toxicological hazards have been associated with the normal use of instant color films. However, direct contact with the highly alkaline processing fluids can cause alkafl bums. The fluids are provided in sealed pods and are not usually handled by the user. In the integral systems, the fluids are retained within the film unit and neutralized in the course of processing. The ASME, Performance Test Code on Overall Plant Performance, ASME PTC 46, was designed to determine the performance of the entire heat cycle as an integrated system. This code provides explicit procedures to determination of power plant thermal performance and electrical output. 

The encapsulation of electrical components provides an interesting extension to the use of plastics materials as insulators. Components of electronic systems may be embedded in a single cast block of resin (the process of encapsulation). Such integrated systems are less sensitive to handling and humidity and in the event of failure the whole assembly may be replaced using seldom more than a simple plugging-in operation. Encapsulation of miniaturised components has proved invaluable, particularly in spacecraft.

Don t divorce the quality system documents from other documents of your business - develop an integrated system. 

Before any plan can be developed you must first have a vision of what the fully integrated system might look like. It may also be helpful to contrast the existing arrangements for PSM and ESH with this vision of the future. In this way, the advantages of integration can be more completely understood. 

It is also useful to identify any drivers that may support new integrated systems—or any factors that may inhibit integration. By identifying these the team will be able to take advantage of support and work around any problems. 

The result of this analysis for Xmple, Inc. is illustrated in Exhibit 3-3 (see foldout), which provides a good visual impression of the strengths and weaknesses of the existing programs. This information will be used later (see Chapter 5) to decide how to start developing integrated systems. 

The assessment provides substantial information on the existing systems. Since it is not possible to redesign the entire integrated system simultaneously, you should start with the management processes, as these are the drivers. 

What is needed to develop integrated management processes and programs and elements. This should be a summary of the integrated systems and programs and elements that will be developed.
