Integrated process management

The following subsection gives a description of an integrated process management system which is based on an existing product management system according to approach IA2 (cf. Fig. 7.22). Its realization will be performed in cooperation with innotec, a partner in the transfer project T6. 

Also the use of mixed cultures, that is, two different species used together in fermentation can increase the resultant ethanol output. In addition to varying and optimizing the microorganism used, process management plays an important role in the ethanol yield. One other aspect of process optimization involves consistent operation to estabhshed process standards. The methodologies of Integrated Process Management as proposed by Brian Slater (3) are being used to address this issue. This methodology is entirely consistent with the ISO 9002 standards.

The Level 3 system designer now needs to decide of an FMES is justified or not. For smaller FMEAs, this might not be require but, to keep the whole integration process manageable, it is essential to provide a summary of a very lengthy FMEA to the next level of system integration.

By year-end 1995 we will have implemented a fully integrated process safety management system throughout our worldwide operations. 

Fewer processes to manage. Once the integrated processes are in place, the total number of management processes and the number of steps within those processes will be reduced. Less management attention will be required to oversee these streamlined processes. 

In many organizations, the existing PSM and ESH systems may be partially or almost completely informal. It is essential that this informality is eliminated in the integrated system. An informal system exists when there are few written policies, procedures or standards, or written requirements are not enforced or followed. Informal systems almost invariably contain internal inconsistencies which can lead to breakdowns in PSM and ESH management. Different departments and locations will have different systems. Part of the team s work will be to formalize these informal PSM and ESH management during the integration process.

Management systems for chemical process safety are comprehensive sets of policies, procedures, and practices designed to ensure that barriers to major incidents are in place, in use, and effective. The management systems serve to integrate process safety concepts into ongoing activities of everyone involved in operations— from the chemical process operator to the chief executive officer.
