Polyurethane foams integral

Semiflexible molded polyurethane foams are used in other automotive appHcations, such as instmment panels, dashboards, arm rests, head rests, door liners, and vibrational control devices. An important property of semiflexible foam is low resiHency and low elasticity, which results in a slow rate of recovery after deflection. The isocyanate used in the manufacture of semiflexible foams is PMDI, sometimes used in combination with TDI or TDI prepolymers. Both polyester as well as polyether polyols are used in the production of these water-blown foams. Sometimes integral skin molded foams are produced. 

Unlike other polymers, we have no universally accepted chemical nomenclature for polyurethanes. Instead, we typically refer to polyurethanes in terms of their general characteristics. Thus we refer to flexible polyurethane foams , polyurethane elastomers , integral skin polyurethane foams , and others. 

Rigid integral skin polyurethane foams are used to make seat pans, office equipment housings, tanning beds, water skis, and surfboards, all of which must be light and stiff.

Foams can be made from thermoplastics, thermosets and rubbers. Densities can be obtained from nearly solid down to 200 times diluted. Structural (or integral) foams have a solid skin. The best known foam materials are polystyrene foam, polyurethane foam and polyether foam.

MAJOR APPLICATIONS Polyurethane urea is useful in making interior automobile parts like armrests, head rests, gear shifts, knee protection pad, etc. Rigid integral PU foams are used in electronic and construction fields.

In flexible slabstock and molded polyurethane foam production, methylene chloride, CO2 (liquid or gas injection), and water are used as ABAs. In rigid insulation foams CFCs have been replaced with HFC-134a (sometimes blended with HFC 152a) or liquid CO2. In integral skin polyurethane products, CO2, water, and hydrocarbons are used for the purpose.

This objective is being achieved by the use of many different materials and processes. As ever with plastics, the main theme is consolidation of components. For interior panels, this takes the form of integrating two or more layers in a sandwich construction. Examples include a textile skin formed over wood-filled polypropylene pressing, in a single operation, to produce a door panel, and a unit seat, in which the polyurethane foam is formed with the fabric facing already in position. 

The foamed metallocene polypropylene (FMP) has been developed by Sentinal Products Corporation in collaboration with Ferro. FMP products have advantages over competitive materials such as polyurethane foam, integral skin PVC foam and non-metallocene-based polyolefin foams. Due to the moisture barrier character, foamed metallocene polypropylene (FMP) offer alternatives to more expensive polyurethane foams in the medical packaging arena.
