Rubin LD. Intal (Cromolyn Sodium) A Monograph. 1st ed. Bedford, MA Fisons Corporation, 1973. [Pg.216]

It is now more than ten years since Fisons, U.K. introduced the compound Intal, cromolyn sodium, or disodium cromoglycate as it will be referred to in this introduction, as an effective agent for the prophylaxis of asthma in man. This introduction caused considerable excitement and activity in the rest of the pharmaceutical industry as well as in academic medical circles. There were several reasons for this interest but one of the most important was that cromoglycate appeared to be a drug with a completely novel mode of action in asthma therapy. [Pg.3]

Mast cell stabilizers include cromolyn sodium (Intal) and nedocromil sodium (Tilade). [Pg.341]

Disodium cromoglycate (724), marketed as Intal or Cromolyn Sodium, bears some structural resemblance to khellin (457), the spasmolytic component of seeds of Ammi visnaga. Intal is one of the more successful drugs for the prevention of asthmatic attacks, though it is not effective in the treatment of an acute attack of asthma. It appears to prevent the release of histamine and other substances which mediate hypersensitivity reactions but is ineffective once these substances have been released. The chemistry and pharmacology of Intal have been reviewed (B-70MI22402). [Pg.882]

Cromones such as cromolyn sodium (Intal, Nasal-crom) and nedocromil sodium (Tilade) can help prevent bronchospasm in people with asthma. These drugs are not bronchodilators and will not reverse bronchoconstriction during an asthmatic attack. Hence, these agents must be taken prior to the onset of bronchoconstriction, and they must typically be administered prophylactically to prevent asthma attacks that are initiated by specific, well-defined activities (e.g., exercise, exposure to a friend s pet, pollen).107 Likewise, the regular use of these drugs several times each day for several months may decrease airway hyperresponsiveness so that the incidence of asthmatic attacks decreases.102,113... [Pg.379]

Cromolyn Sodium, USP. Cromolyn stxlium. dlsodium 1.3 - bis (2 -carboxychnimon - 5 - yloxy) -2-hydroxy propane (Intal). is a hygroscopic, white, hydrated crystalline powder that is soluble in water (1 10). It i.s tasteless at first but leaves a very slightly biller aftertaste. The pK of cromolyn is 2.0. It is available as a solution for a nebuliz.cr. an aerosol spray, a nasal solution, an ophthalmic solution, and an oral concentrate. [Pg.715]

Cromolyn sodium (inhalation 20 mg/2 mL), Intal in capsules (20 mg for inhalation only), solution (20 mg per amp for nebulizer only), and aerosol spray (delivers 800 meg), Nasalcrom (nasal solution in 40 mg/mL), and Gastrocom (100 mg capsule for oral administration) are used for prophylactic management of severe bronchial asthma. As an antiasthmatic, antiallergic, and mast cell stabilizer, cromolyn has no bronchodilating, antiinflammatory, anticholinergic, or vas-oconstricting properties. [Pg.174]
