For insulators, Z is very small because p is very high, ie, there is Htde electrical conduction for metals, Z is very small because S is very low. Z peaks for semiconductors at - 10 cm charge carrier concentration, which is about three orders of magnitude less than for free electrons in metals. Thus for electrical power production or heat pump operation the optimum materials are heavily doped semiconductors. [Pg.507]

Low-loss system. In a low-loss system the winding also resides in a reservoir of liquid helium but a very efficient insulation system enables the magnet to operate for long periods, typically I year or more, between liquid helium refills. An important feature of these systems is that they are relatively immune to short-term electrical power failures, which has enabled complete reliability even in extremely difficult environments. [Pg.1800]

Temperature Measurement shift. Measurement not representative of process. Indicator reading varies second to second. Ambient temperature change. Fast changing process temperature. Electrical power wires near thermocouple extension wires. Increase immersion length. Insulate surface. Use quick response or low thermal time constant device. Use shielded, twisted pair thermocouple extension wire, and/or install in conduit. [Pg.325]

The heat and flame resistance coupled with good electrical insulation characteristics, which includes in some grades good arcing and arc tracking resistance, has led to PPS replacing some of the older thermosets in electrical parts. These include connectors, coil formers, bobbins, terminal blocks, relay components, moulded bulb sockets for electric power station control panels, brush holders, motor housings, thermostat parts and switch components. [Pg.595]

Pollutants have various atmospheric residence times, with reactive gases and large aerosols being rapidly removed from air. In the London air pollution episode of December 1952, the residence time for sulfur dioxide was estimated to be five hours daily emissions of an estimated 2,000 tons of sulfur dioxide were balanced by scavenging by fog droplets, which were rapidly deposited. Most relatively inert gases remain in the atmosphere for extended periods. Sulfur hexafluoride, used extensively in the electric power industiy as an insulator in power breakers because of its inertness, has an estimated atmospheric lifetime of 3,200 years. [Pg.85]

Induction motors usually entail insulated wiring windings for both the rotor and the stator, with the stator connected to an external electric power source. Between the narrow gap of the stator and the rotor, a revolving magnetic field is established. A current can be established only when the waves of the rotor and stator windings are not in phase—not at a maximum simultaneously. [Pg.402]

There will be exceptions to this rule, such as thicker insulation where electric power is expensive, or thinner insulation for a chamber only used infrequently. Ceiling panels may be thicker to give added structural strength. In cases of doubt, the insulation costs must be resolved as the optimum owning cost. [Pg.175]

The second effect is caused by the operation of alternating electrical fields on the dielectric in the system. This can happen to insulation at power frequencies as well as higher frequencies. This is not the dielectric... [Pg.227]

The dielectric strength of an insulator is the electric field strength at which it physically breaks down and begins to conduct electricity. High values are required when the material will experience high electrical stresses, such as those found in the insulation surrounding power transmission cables. Dielectric strength decreases as temperature and humidity increase. It also decreases with time, due to the creation of conductive paths on the surface of the material. [Pg.184]

Submersible turbine pumps are a variety of vertical turbine pumps with the motor attached below the pumping unit. Water passes in through an intake port located between the motor and bowl assembly, then upward through the bowl stages to the surface through the pump pipe. Electric power is supplied to the motor by specially insulated wires. Submersible turbine pumps are manufactured for water supply and oil well usage by a wide variety of manufactures in sizes ranging from /3 to several hundred horsepower, and are constructed of materials suited for many chemicals. [Pg.225]

Electrical Properties. LDPE s electrical properties make it extremely well suited for wire and cable insulation for electrical power supplies at high transmission, lower domestic voltage, and high frequency, very high frequency, or ultrahigh frequency applications in electronics. As a dielectric, i,e., electric insulator, LDPE for all practical purposes does not transmit electrical current. [Pg.1141]

Enterprises which hold large volumes of waste PCBs, PCB-containing waste oils and disused pole-mounted transformers that contain PCB-containing insulation oils are building or planning to build treatment facilities on their own. It is essential for the government to assist and encourage their effort. For pole-mounted transformers and insulation oils extracted from these pole-mounted transformers, concerted actions will be taken in line with the efforts of electric power companies which store those PCB wastes. [Pg.25]
