Instrumental and analytical techniques

Portfolio management concepts have been an accepted component of the financial services realm for decades, and the need to diversify risk continues to be an effective organizing principle for many financial instruments and analytic techniques. Risk assessment is also a key component in the pharmaceutical world, where as few as 1 in 5000 laboratory-tested compounds ever makes it to the market. As such, the pipeline portfolio is a critical indicator of the future of a pharmaceutical firm, and the process of analyzing and managing it effectively is of vital strategic importance. 

Laboratory Techniques. In addition to the previous research programs which address the personnel and management information needs of forensic science laboratories, the National Institute is funding research to improve instrumentation and analytical techniques applied to the analysis of physical evidence. The Aerospace Corporation of El Segundo, California, and the Law Enforcement Standards Laboratory of the National Bureau of Standards (NBS) have served as prime contractors to the Institute in the laboratory technique area. Although space does not permit a complete discussion of all projects underway at Aerospace and NBS, I will describe two project areas which are of great interest to forensic science practitioners and researchers. 

The following instruments and analytical techniques were used FT-IR Perkin-Elmer FTIR 1750, KBr pellets, Raman Bruker IFS 55 H, C and Si NMR spectroscopy Bruker WM 300, solvent rfa-DMSO, internal standard Si(CH3)4) TGA-MS Netzsch STA 429, coupled with a Balzers QMG 420 mass spectrometer.

Recent advances in instrumental and analytical techniques have been analysed in order to view their impact on the use of halogens in NMR spectroscopy.
