Institute for Theoretical Physics

Wliile continuing work with Flahn at the new Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Chemistry in Berlin-Dahlem, beginning in 1912 Meitner served as assistant to Max Planck at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Berlin, and in 1918 was appointed head of the physics department at the Kaiser-Wilhelm Institute.

Much of our understanding of quantum mechanics came out of a small building located near the soccer fields of Faelled Park in Copenhagen, Denmark. The building was constructed in 1921 to house Niels Bohr s new Institute for Theoretical Physics. The Institute became a magnet for aspiring physicists. 

Great scientists came and went at the Institute. One thing remained constant, however Bohr himself. He was kindly, brilliant, and well connected. Thus, it was only fitting that in 1965, on Bohr s birthday, the Institute for Theoretical Physics was renamed the Niels Bohr Institute. 

A native of the state of New Hampshire, Donald Fitts developed an interest in chemistry at the age of eleven. He was awarded an A.B. degree, magna cum laude with highest honors in chemistry, in 1954 from Harvard University and a Ph.D. degree in chemistry in 1957 from Yale University for his theoretical work with John G. Kirkwood. After one-year appointments as a National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute for Theoretical Physics, University of Amsterdam, and as a Research Fellow at Yale s Chemistry Department, he joined the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania, rising to the rank of Professor of Chemistry.

Walter Kohn (b. 1923) received a Ph D. in physics from Harvard University in 1948. In the early to mid-1960s, Kohn played the lead role in developing density-functional theory, which has become the predominant method for determining the electronic structures and total energies of molecules and solids. For this work he was awarded the 1998 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Kohn also made seminal contributions to superconductivity, semiconductor physics, and surface physics. Kohn started his career as an instructor at Harvard and then moved to Carnegie Mellon (1950-1960), the University of Califomia-San Diego (1960-1979), and finally, the University of Califomia-Santa Barbara (1979), where he became emeritus in 1991. At UCSB, Kohn was the founding director of the world-renowned Institute for Theoretical Physics. Kohn was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences in 1969, and he is a member of the Royal Society of London and the Bavarian Society.

Keeping these subjects in perspective, we organized a conference entitled Geometrical Structures of Phase Space in Multidimensional Chaos— Applications to Chemical Reaction Dynamics in Complex Systems from 26th October to 1st November, 2003, at the Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics, Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan. A pre-conference was also held at Kobe University from 20th to 25th October.
