Collaborations with academic scientists have historically been an important component of the drug industry s R D efforts and continue to be so today. Of all U.S. industries, innovation within the pharmaceutical industry is the most dependent on academic research and the Federal funds that support it. In recent years, advances in biotechnology that occurred within academic research laboratories added to the task of transferring basic scientific knowledge from academia and government to industrial applications. [Pg.234]

Under tribalism, individual responsibility was neither encouraged nor wanted. Harmony and a continuation of a system that worked for the group was dependent on obedience. Tradition and religion governed every action. Under such a system, there could be no individuality, thus no innovation, hence, no progress. [Pg.94]

Tt is encouraging to note that innovation is receiving major attention - by industry and government policy makers not only in the United States but in most other industrialized nations as well. Among other benefits, innovation is seen as a way to create new jobs, increase productivity, and reduce infiation. Due to a combination of circumstances, U.S. iimovation has been lagging somewhat behind its past outstanding performance. Current statistics, such as oiu- continuing trade deficits, with no hope of a surplus in the immediate future, illustrate the seriousness of the current situation. By no means, however, is innovation dead in this country, nor will it be in the future. [Pg.3]
