Initiatives and Projects

There may be cases where multiple projects make a lot of sense. There are probably an equal number of cases where fewer would also be better. To help organize a change program, we recommend a three-level construct from the strategy to the initiative to the project or action plan that implements the strategy. 

The organization has latitude when it comes to defining initiatives. For example, there might be one for each major supply chain process. In the case of the SCOR model from the Supply-Chain Council (refer to Chapter 23), this would be plan, source, make, and deliver. 

They could also be organized by solution type. Examples would be systems, production technology, or organization development and skills enhancement. Another alternative for sorting is by end result. Examples include cost reduction, cycle time reduction, quality improvement, or revenue enhancement. A six sigma program is an example of an end result approach. Another alternative set of initiatives might be our five tasks for SCM. 

In structuring initiatives, the emphasis should be on finding a method of sorting fhaf besf fifs fhe company. It s fine also to mix the methods just described. 

Project definition should include the elements shown in Table 12.1 below. This action plan should guide the implementation effort.

In conclusion, while the book provides a realistic picture of the range of R D initiatives and projects to develop hydrogen and fuel cells, the high number of technology options under consideration points out that such an effort is only the beginning of a several-decades journey toward a radically changed, sustainable energy system. 

The production of renewable energy in the electricity sector should be considered in relation to the privatisation of the electricity production and distribution companies and the liberalisation of the electricity market in the Netherlands and for a large part in Europe. Despite this uncertain future a large number of initiatives and projects have been developed to increase the production of renewable electricity and heat in the coal-fired power plants in the Netherlands. 

Project initiation and project planning accounted for 19 percent of the time (labor) spent on the project. Recognize that, in the private sector, some of the project time spent on project initiation is typically spent prior to the formal start of a project, that is, before a contract or agreement is signed. It is marketing. 

Develop a portfolio of supply chain-related initiatives and projects organized by process (discussed later). Classify the projects using one of the strategy frameworks described in this book or a local adaptation that better fits the organization. Organize teams to execute the projects. We recommend team structures and participation later in Chapter 12. 

For all cases we have propagated, the system is started in the initial vibrational state, i = 0, with total average energy 1.75 eV and projected at four selected energies, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 eV, respectively. 

Initially there were attempts to quantify and project magnitudes of power shifted and relief provided to the capacity resource requirements. Ultimately the shifting of load became embedded in the subsequent forecast and became harder to identify.

The third cleanup program, also authorized by the RCRA, addresses contamination resulting from leaks and spills (mainly petroleum products) from underground storage tanks (USTs). This law has compelled cleanup activities at many UST sites. By February 1999, over 385,000 releases had been reported, 327,000 cleanup projects initiated, and 211,000 projects completed. 

Of the projects in the database, four completed projects using pump-and-treat provided performance data for initial and final MTBE concentrations. Median concentrations were 27,000 pg/L for before treatment and <1 pg/L for after treatment. The median project duration for these projects was 14 months. Note that these treatment performance figures are based on the data provided by project managers and others in the source materials used to prepare the treatment profiles website.

Typically a network of firewater systems mains is provided in a facility that form loops. These can be segregated into sections or legs and the performance of each can be determined by flow test. Flow tests release quantities of water that are measured and graphed. Performing an initial acceptance baseline test and recording the results from year to year can portray the performance of the firewater system and projections of the useful life of the system can be determined.
