As a result of the experience drawn from several countries of the region, special emphasis has to be given to the practical approaches that have been successful in the past [17]. Success, viability and acceptance of marginal water use in agriculture depends on locally adapted water and soil management practices, with appropriate selection of cropping pattern and farming practices.

Another approach often used is to transfer and adjust results from other related studies, a so-called Benefit Transfer. This procedure is often used since making new, locally adapted studies is expensive and time consuming.

When you are buying new plants, you can avoid a lot of future problems by choosing locally adapted plants or resistant cultivars. Plants that are native to an area are often less prone to problems because they are growing in the environment to which they are best adapted. Read about the plants you intend to buy, and avoid very pest-prone speeies. If you have your heart set on a plant that is especially vulnerable to some problem, consider buying a resistant cultivar if one is available. Look for this information in catalogs, or ask your local nursery owner or extension agent for more information on the plants best adapted to your area. 

The reliability of the above theoretical results obviously depends on the quality of the hypersurface. At the SCF level, only the parts of the surface locally adapted around the stationary points corresponding to equilibrium structures are relatively accurate. For example, the SCF vibrational frequencies are overestimated with respect to experimental data by approximately 10% (Sana, 1981a). SCF heats of reaction and equilibrium constants are generally not satisfactory except for the transformations in which the number of electron pairs is conserved and, particularly, for isodesmic reactions.
