Thietane is a superior inhibitor of corrosion of iron in 10% hydrochloric acid and its effectiveness is said to be due to partial polymerization on the surface of the iron. Addition of chloride ion reduces the inhibition, possibly by inducing ringopening with the formation of sulfhydryl groups. The cyclic sulfide also has been considered as an odorant for natural gas and its absorption by organic soil and clay have been determined. Stabilization of methylchloroform and trichloroethylene by thietane, 2-methylthietane, 3-hydroxythietane, and two spirothietane derivatives has been claimed. Phosphorus and tin derivatives of 3,3-bis-hydroxy-methylthie-tane are reported to be light stabilizers for poly(vinyl chloride), and the dibutyl-tin derivative is a catalyst for the polymerization of aliphatic isocyanates. Mercury and zinc compounds derived from phenylmercury or phenylzinc hydroxide and 3-... [Pg.438]

Use Inhibitor of corrosion in metal pickling solutions accelerator activator in elastomers. [Pg.424]

The application of NN in product design concentrates on a few classes of materials. The fuel additives have been used as combustion modifiers, antioxidants, inhibitors of corrosion, deposit controllers, etc. The authors have proposed a hybrid approach combining modeling and NN. The results obtained from modeling have been introduced into the net and compared with the experimental results. Such an approach enabled the tuning of the model allowing for the prediction of the build-up of the deposit as a function of the composition of the additives. [Pg.523]

Disperse oxides unmodified or modified by organics (OC) or OSC are used as fillers, adsorbents, or additives [1-11]. OSCs are used as promoters of adhesion, inhibitors of corrosion, for the stabilization of monodisperse oxides and the formation of the nanoscaled particles. Oxide modification by alcohols or other OC is of interest for synthesis of polymer fillers, as such modification leads to plasticization and reinforcement of the filled coating, but in this case a question arises about hydrolyz-ability of the =M—O—C bonds between oxide surface and alkoxy groups, as those are less stable than =M—O— M= formed, for example, upon the silica modification by silanes or siloxanes. The high dispersity, high specific surface area, and high adsorption ability of fumed oxides have an influence on their efficiency as fillers of polymer systems. [Pg.487]

Inhibitors of corrosion and salt-formation based on the complexes of or-ganophosphonic acids with <7-metals, mainly with zinc, ate rather widespread [1-4]. However, the preparation of the inhibitors of this particular class with a prespecified structure and high-repeatability anticorrosive efficiency is very difficult because oiganophosphonic acids similar to other oxygen compounds of phosphor tend to the formation of spatial polymer structures [5]. Therefore, known maiketable products contain particles of an inhibitor with nonstable structure and demonstrate changing inhibiting properties. [Pg.290]

SODIUM DISnJCATE. Na.SijOs. Sodium disiii-cate has been used as an inhibitor of corrosion of aluminum alloys in alkaline solutions. See also Ref (7 p. 165. [Pg.626]

The first paper published by Hinton et al. (1984) describes the use of cerium chloride salts as aqueous inhibitors of corrosion for 7075-T6 aliuninum alloy in a O.IM solution of aerated sodimn chloride. Three years later, the same author published a study which stated that additions of small concentrations of rare earth salts (1000 ppm of LaCl3, YCI3, PrCl, NdCl, or CeCy, to a 0.1M NaCl solution induce a decrease in the corrosion rate of AA7075 (Amott et al., 1987). The best degree of inhibition was achieved with Ce ions (Fig. 3.1) when added as chloride compounds (Hinton et al., 1986), because of the formation of a compact film of cerium oxides and hydroxides (Amott et al., 1985). [Pg.87]

Inhibitors of corrosion in acid solution can interact with metals and affect the corrosion reaction in a number of ways, some of which may occur simultaneously. It is often not possible to assign a single general mechanism of action to an inhibitor because the mechanism may change with experimental conditions. Thus, the predominant mechanism of action of an inhibitor may vary with factors such as its concentration, the pH of the acid, the nature of the anion of the acid, the presence of other species in the solution, the extent of reaction to form secondary inhibitors, and the nature of the metal. The mechanism of action of inhibitors with the same functional group may additionally vary with factors such as the effect of the molecular structure on the electron density of the functional group and the size of the hydrocarbon portion of the molecule. [Pg.839]

Inhibitors of corrosion in the open atmosphere are applied directly to the metal surfaces to be protected. The most common method is the use of chromates in paints. Zinc chromate and red lead... [Pg.155]

Internal corrosion of storage tanks is due chiefly to water, which settles and remains on the bottom. Coatings and cathodic protection should be used. Alkaline sodium chromate (or sodium nitrate) is an effective inhibitor of corrosion for domestic fuel oil tanks. [Pg.181]

Scanning vibrating electrode measurements of the ionic currents above the surface and the corresponding optical images of (a) unmodified aluminum alloy (b) aluminum alloy coated with SiO ZrO film (c) aluminum alloy coated with container-loaded SiO ZrO film (the inhibitor of corrosion incorporated into containers), ale units pA cm, spatial resolution 150 pm. Solution 0.1 M NaCl.Time of scanning was 12 h (Skorb etaL, 2009). [Pg.276]

Other uses for hexamine are in pharmaceuticals, as an inhibitor of corrosion caused by strong mineral acids, for shrink-proofing agents in the textile industry, and as an agent to enhance color fastness and elasticity to cellulose fibers. It also has potential for end use as a fungicide in the citrus fruit industry. Hexamine produces methylene groups without forming water, as in the case with paraformaldehyde. [Pg.1120]
