Cycle Information

A central event in the origin of life was the self-assembly of a molecular system in which catalytic polymers could interact with a second class of polymers having the capacity to store information in a sequence of monomers. That sequence in turn would in some manner determine the sequence of monomers in the catalyst, so that the resulting catalytic-information cycle... [Pg.21]

At each stage of a field life cycle raw data has to be converted into information, but for the information to have value it must influence decision making and profitability. [Pg.136]

Appraisal activity, if performed, is the step in the field life cycle between the discovery of a hydrocarbon accumulation and its development. The role of appraisal is to provide cost-effective information with which the subsequent decision can be made. Cost effective means that the value of the decision with the appraisal information is greater than the value of the decision without the information. If the appraisal activity does not add more value than its cost, then it is not worth doing. This can be represented by a simple flow diagram, in which the cost of appraisal is A, the profit (net present value) of the development with the appraisal information is (D2-A), and the profit of the development without the appraisal information is D1. [Pg.173]

The relaxation and creep experiments that were described in the preceding sections are known as transient experiments. They begin, run their course, and end. A different experimental approach, called a dynamic experiment, involves stresses and strains that vary periodically. Our concern will be with sinusoidal oscillations of frequency v in cycles per second (Hz) or co in radians per second. Remember that there are 2ir radians in a full cycle, so co = 2nv. The reciprocal of CO gives the period of the oscillation and defines the time scale of the experiment. In connection with the relaxation and creep experiments, we observed that the maximum viscoelastic effect was observed when the time scale of the experiment is close to r. At a fixed temperature and for a specific sample, r or the spectrum of r values is fixed. If it does not correspond to the time scale of a transient experiment, we will lose a considerable amount of information about the viscoelastic response of the system. In a dynamic experiment it may... [Pg.173]

Flow-sheet models are used at all stages in the life cycle of a process plant during process development, for process design and retrofits, and for plant operations. Input to the model consists of information normally contained in the process flow sheet. Output from the model is a complete representation of the performance of the plant, including the composition, flow, and properties of all intermediate and product streams and the performance of the process units. [Pg.72]

Generahzed correlations are available for each of the operations which make up the full filter cycle. This means that simulated operating conditions can be varied to obtain a maximum of information without requiring an excessive number of test runs. The minimum number of test runs required for a given feed will, of course, vary with the expertise of the experimenter and the number of operations performed during the filter cycle. If, for example, the operation invdves only the dewatering of a slurry which forms a cake of relatively low to moderate porosity, frequently sufficient data can be obtained in as little as six runs. For more difficult tests, more runs are usually advisable, and the novice certainly should make a larger number of runs as there is likely to be more data scatter. [Pg.1696]

The application of waste-management practices in the United States has recently moved toward securing a new pollution prevention ethic. The performance of pollution prevention assessments and their subsequent implementation will encourage increased activity into methods that 1 further aid in the reduction of hazardous wastes. One of the most important and propitious consequences of the pollution-prevention movement will be the development of life-cycle design and standardized hfe-cycle cost-accounting procedures. These two consequences are briefly discussed in the two paragraphs that follow. Additional information is provided in a later subsection. [Pg.2163]

Variable nozzles produce a series of jets of gas entering the rotor, and these impulses add up to form a frequency equal to the blade-passing frequency the number of revolutions per second multiplied by the number of nozzle vanes, which is of the order of thousands of cycles per second. Frequently the rotor will resonate at this frequency, and if it does, it will be fatigued and crack and break up thus these frequencies must be avoided, and the manufac turer should be asked to supply information to the customer on this subject. [Pg.2522]
