This information comes from a quite remarkable book. Crystal Fire The Birth of the Information Age (Riordan and Hoddeson 1997), which maps out systematically but very accessibly the events that led to the discovery of the transistor and the aftermath of that episode. I know of no better aceount of the interloeking sequence of events that led to eventual success, and of the personal characteristics of the principal participants that played such a great part in the story. 

A detailed account of the steps that led to the first transistor, and the steps soon afterwards to improve and miniaturise the device, and to shift from germanium to silicon, would take too much space in this chapter, and the reader must be referred to Riordan and Hoddeson s systematic and rivetting account, though space will be found for a brief account of the subsequent birth of the integrated circuit, the vector of the information age. But before this, some remarks are in order about the crucial interplay of physics and metallurgy in the run-up to the transistor.

Even here, with well-established approaches, we see the influence of the information age. Employing computers to determine receptor structure and, thus, possible receptive blockers has become a useful tool in the drug discovery process. Computer-assisted drug synthesis has great potential. The revolution in this aspect of synthetic chemistry is analogous to the revolution that computers caused in the animation industry. Where once dozens of artists were necessary, computers have now replaced them, creating "life-like" animations that were not previously feasible. The same type of revolution will occur in the chemical drug synthetic industry. 

However, the information age applications to synthetic modeling will be inherently limited unless we can improve our screening techniques. For many years, 1 have given considerable thought to the link between drug synthesis, discovery, and development. 

As we transcend from the information age to the age of wisdom and knowledge as many modem philosophers suggest, it is perhaps fitting to offer the conunon wisdoms within the field of PA. 

Uncritical acceptance of information is and remains the real issue with the so-called information age. The value of textbooks such as the present one is that access to the classical work is provided and much of the information has been digested to an acceptable format. With this in mind, individual chapters have suggested reading lists in an attempt to provide a bridge between the present omnivorous information bases and the subject basics.
