Industrial ecology product manufacture

Additionally, in borrowing ideas from the industrial ecology concept, Allen and Shonnard advocate the relatively new approach of identifying uses for chemical byproducts in industries that extend further beyond chemical manufacturing. Acknowledging that the principle of identifying productive uses for byproducts... [Pg.96]

In conventional industrial systems, a product is manufactured and marketed after which the vendor forgets about it (unless some product defect, such as sticking accelerator pedals on an automobile, forces a recall). In a system of industrial ecology, however, the entire life cycle of the product is considered. An important aspect of such a consideration is life cycle assessment. The overall goal of a life cycle assessment is to determine, measure, and minimize environmental and resource impacts of products and services. [Pg.353]

In the laboratory or process research section a laboratory procedure for a fine chemical is worked out. The resulting process description provides the necessary data for the determination of preliminary product specifications, the manufacture of semicommercial quantities in the pilot plant, the assessment of the ecological impact, an estimation of the manufacturing cost in an industrial-scale plant, and the vaHdation of the process and determination of raw material specifications. [Pg.436]

In order to minimise the possible toxicity and damage to humans and the environment arising from the production and appHcations of colorants, an international association, the Ecological and Toxicological Association of the Dyestuff Manufacturing Industry (ETAD), was estabUshed in 1974. [Pg.387]

In a thorough ecological comparison of electrochemical with other manufacturing methods, of course, the pollution of air and water by the additional generation of electric power must also be taken into account. Fortunately, the largest electrochemical industries, such as aluminum production, as a rule are concentrated around ecologically clean hydropower plants. [Pg.405]

A new industrial process based on the reaction of sodium monochloroacetate with aqueous alkyl polyglycoside (without additional solvents) enables the manufacturing of this product in an economically and ecologically favorable way (Fig. 4.16). [Pg.91]

In the past decades the rapidly expanding automobile industry required increasing numbers of tires with various characteristics. This led not only to the development of new rubber grades, but also to the development of new carbon blacks required by the increasingly refined application processes and to the development of a new and better manufacturing process, the furnace black process. Unlike the old channel black process, this process allows the production of nearly all types of carbon black required by the rubber industry. It also meets the high economic and ecological requirements of our times. [Pg.150]
