SBR is the most widely used synthetic elastomer. It is an amorphous random copolymer consisting of a mixture of l.2, cis and trans isomers. Cold SBR produced at —20 C consists of 17% 1,2. 6% cis and 77% trans isomers of polybutadiene. This commercial product has a Tt of -60 C, an index of refraction of 1.534S, and a coefficient of linear expansion of 66 X 10 s cm/ cm C. Because of the high percentage of the trans isomer, it is less flexible and has a higher heat buildup, when flexed, than Hevea rubber. Although carbon black-filled or amorphous silica-filled SBR has useful physical and mechanical properties, the SBR gum rubber is inferior to Hevea rubber. [Pg.144]

Polyolefins have a central position in the marketplace of synthetic polymers, in terms of annual production volume . In the 1960s, Natta and coworkers reported that syndio-enriched polypropylene could be prepared by polymerization of propylene at —78°C in the presence of a mixture of vanadium tetrachloride and Et2AlCl . The molecular weight increased steadily for 25 h, and the polydispersity index (1.4 < My /M < 1.9) was moderately low °. From the point of view of synthetic effort, preparation of combinatorial mixtures is by far the most economical approach. It can be done with ordinary laboratory equipment and does not take more time than the synthesis of any one of the individual components of the library. This simplicity, however, has its price firstly, the more components a mixture contains the more difficult it becomes to follow the reaction analytically and to determine the actual composition of the reaction product. Secondly, if hits are found in a biological assay, deconvolution is required. In most cases this is done via resynthesis either of the individual components or of subsets of the mixture. If the composition of the initial mixtures was carefully planned it may be possible to identify the active component(s) by simply comparing the composition of the active mixtures with those of the inactive ones. Corresponding procedures have been reported in the literature (e.g., the techniques of indexed [1,2] and orthogonal [3] chemical libraries have been used in solution-phase synthesis). However, the biological effect of a mixture may also be due to a combined action of several weakly active members, with the result that deconvolution does not identify a significantly active compound. Finally, the problem of impurities multiplies with the complexity of the mixtures. [Pg.79]

The synthetic preparations used are the sodium salts of the natural isomers of the thyroid hormones. Levothyroxine sodium (L-T, synthroid, levoxyl, levothroid, unithroid, others) is available in tablets in a variety of doses and as a lyophilized powder for injection. L-T has a narrow therapeutic index, and the FDA has mandated demonstration of bioequivalence for brand and generic preparations by the various producers. Liothyronine sodium (L-Tft is available in tablets (cytomel) and in an injectable form (triostat). A mixture of L-T and L-T is marketed as liotrix (thyroiar). Desiccated thyroid preparations, derived from whole animal thyroids and containing both T and T have highly variable biologic activity and are much less desirable. [Pg.987]

Aromatic fractions can be alkylated with olefins to produce products which are used as synthetic lubricants.An aromatic fraction boiling between 160 and 210°C is generally alkylated with Cm to Cw olefins in a ratio of about 2 1. A higher-boiling aromatic fraction (boiling between 210 and 260°C) is reacted with Cs to Cw olefins in a ratio of 1 3. Aluminum chloride promoted with hydrogen chloride is the catalyst normally used. When the alkylated aromatics are blended with thickeners such as polyisobutylene, the mixture obtained is an excellent lubricant with a good viscosity index, stability, and pour point. [Pg.810]

For compounds prepared in mixtures, the identification of the active compound(s) from these mixtures is approached in various ways. Methods comprise identification by analytical means, iterative or noniterative strategies, as well as the generation of indexed libraries, or elucidation of the structure by the aid of so-called "tags" that encode for the single building blocks and the synthetic history. [Pg.145]

Essential oils are concentrated extracts or steam distillates of aromatic plants. Oils such as wintergreen or jasmine have been added to enhance the flavor and smell of food for centuries and are key components of perfumes. Chemical analysis of these oils reveals that the overall smell is due to complex mixtures of small molecules, many of which contribute to the smell of the oil. Indole and indolic compounds are common components of these mixtures. Natural jasmine oil typically contains about 2.5% indole. Over time, the increasing cost of raw materials and processing has led to efforts to produce simpler nfixtures that would have the same sensory effect. Reasonable approximations of many of these oils can be made today with completely synthetic components.
