The availability of smartphones that can run apps, read barcodes using the phones camera, and pull information from the web means that data regarding the suppply chains choices may well impact a consumers purchase decision and thus demand. Goodguide is such a company, whose website contains an index summarizing information regarding over 100,000 products (in July 2012) ([45]). A consumer with a smartphone can install an app, direct the camera to the barcode of a product, and immediately receive a product rating that also provides details regarding all supply chain choices made by the company. 

As awareness and scientific understanding of the environmental and social issues facing the ATs industry has expanded, stakeholders within the apparel industry have developed various tools and indices for measuring different aspects of sustainability within the supply chain. Two of the first leading tools were the Outdoor Industry Association s Eco Index (OIA, 2014) and Nike s Apparel Environmental Design Tool (Nike, 2010), both of which evolved into the Sustainable Apparel Coalition s (SAC) Higg Index.

We consider a supply chain that has a distribution network structure, in which each inventory stocking location has a unique supplier. Each inventory location, also known as a member of the supply chain, is identified by an index m, for which the precise definition depends on the actual network structure. As a building block for analyzing supply chain inventory networks, we shall mainly discuss a simple two-level supply chain consisting of a single retailer (denoted by m = 1 or m = r) and a single supplier (m = 2 or m = s). External demand placed (at the retail point) by the customers of the supply chain during period t is denoted by Dt. The inventory policy aims at determining when should a replenishment order be placed and how large should this order be at each time. At every time R, the inventory position I is checked. All the members of the supply chain, except the one in consideration, behave like follows If I is below the reorder threshold s, a replenishment quantity is ordered according to a known law. One example of such law is the proportional one used by Perea-Lopez et al. Nowadays there are two of the hottest trends now among CSR executives are supply chains and collaboration among companies on sustainability. The latest example for these two comes from the apparel industry, where the Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC), a trade association representing more than a third of the global apparel and footwear market, unveiled the Higg Index, a new tool for sustainabihty measurement across the industry value chain. 

The Higg Index is basically a tool enabling apparel companies to better measure the comprehensive enviromnental and social impacts of their products. The idea is that through use of the index companies can identify opportunities to reduce impacts and improve long-term sustainability throughout their supply chain. 

SAC s version goes further than either tool alone, however, according to Jason Kibbey, formerly of PACT and now the group s executive director. The Index mashes these two tools together and builds upon them to provide a holistic view of the entire supply chain that examines brands, facilities, and the products themselves, Kibbey tells Ecouterre.
