Each set of coordinates deposited with the PDB becomes a separate entry. Each entry is associated with an accession PDB code with a unique set of four alphanumeric characters. PDB and its mirror sites offer a text search engine that uses an index of all the textual information in each PDB record (e.g., PDB ID) an example of such an index is 1LYZ for hen s egg-white lysozyme. The first character is a version number. An identifier beginning with the number 0 signifies that the entry is purely bibliographic. The pdb file is a text file with an explanatory header followed by a set of atomic coordinates. The atomic coordinates are subjected to a set of standard stereochemical checks and are translated into a standard entry format for example, Figure 4.10 shows partial coordinate file for ILYZ.pdb or pdblLYZ.ent. 

An explicit reaction scheme is one that has been reported in the literature. Explicit schemes may or may not be indexed in a special way in the reaction database system. Approximately 15% of the reactions in Theilheimer s Synthetic Methods are reported as reaction schemes. In the ORAC Theilheimer database, each individual reaction step and the overall transformation is stored as a separate entry. For example, a sequence A—>C— D is indexed as the three reactions A->B, B->C and C D, plus the overall transformation A- D. Authors in American journals of chemical research are often permitted considerable latitude in the nomenclature that they use. Moreover, as the abstracts in Chemical Abstracts are written by very many different people, and because speed of publication is essential, rigid control of the nomenclature therein is not possible. Control is, however, rigid in the subject indexes, as indeed it must be if one substance is not to be indexed separately under two or more names. Thus, those seeking ofl ciar American names or nomenclature methods should consult the subject index volumes of Chemical Abstracts and not the abstracts themselves. However, names used by authors are entered additionally in the indexes (to aid retrieval) unless grossly wrong, even if they are not the official American name such entries are distinguished by asterisks. 

Section 2 combines the former separate section on Mathematics with the material involving General Information and Conversion Tables. The fundamental physical constants reflect values recommended in 1986. Physical and chemical symbols and definitions have undergone extensive revision and expansion. Presented in 14 categories, the entries follow recommendations published in 1988 by the lUPAC. The table of abbreviations and standard letter symbols provides, in a sense, an alphabetical index to the foregoing tables. The table of conversion factors has been modified in view of recent data and inclusion of SI units cross-entries for archaic or unusual entries have been curtailed. 

This index is divided by element into eight parts. Each part is subdivided into sections devoted to each oxidation state, preceded by a general section. Thus if you want to fmd out about phosphine complexes of Rhodium, there is a general entry to phosphine complexes as well as separate references to phosphine complexes trader the headings of Rhodium(0), (I), (II) and (III). 

The capacity and effectiveness of proprietary devices such as items c to e cannot be estimated from general knowledge, but manufacturers usually claim that they can be sized to remove 99% of 8 pm droplets or particles. Many entries in a BB-matrix are zero. Therefore, for the internal representation of molecules in the program a more compact form was chosen. The constitution of molecules and ensemble of molecules is given by doubly indexed lists of bonds. The free electrons on the atoms are kept in a separate vector, as are the atomic numbers (see Fig. 4).
