The tendency for a solvent to form deposits by polymerization of impurities such as olefins is measured by the test for potential gums . Olefin content can also be represented by the bromine index , which is a measure of the degree of unsaturation (see paragraph 3.4.1). [Pg.274]

The limiting oxygen index of Tefzel as measured by the candle test (ASTM D2863) is 30%. Tefzel is rated 94 V-0 by Underwriters Laboratories, Inc., in their burning test classification for polymeric materials. As a fuel, it has a comparatively low rating. Its heat of combustion is 13.7 MJ/kg (32,500 kcal/kg) compared to 14.9 MJ /kg (35,000 kcal/kg) for poly(vinyHdene fluoride) and 46.5 MJ /kg (110,000 kcal/kg) for polyethylene. [Pg.370]

When exposed to light, the monomeric material in the photopolymers or photothermoplasts polymerizes, thus locally increasing density and index of refraction. A subsequent fixation process polymerizes the monomer throughout the polymer matrix. [Pg.154]

Molecular Weight. PE mol wt (melt index) is usually controlled by reaction temperature or chain-transfer agents. Reaction temperature is the principal control method in polymerization processes with Phillips catalysts. On the other hand, special chemical agents for chain transfer are requited for... [Pg.368]

It may be shown that M > M. The two are equal only for a monodisperse material, in which all molecules are the same sise. The ratio MI /MI is known as the polydispersity index and is a measure of the breadth of the molecular weight distribution. Values range from about 1.02 for carefully fractionated samples or certain polymers produced by anionic polymerization, to 20 or more for some commercial polyethylenes. [Pg.431]

The minimum polydispersity index from a free-radical polymerization is 1.5 if termination is by combination, or 2.0 if chains ate terminated by disproportionation and/or transfer. Changes in concentrations and temperature during the reaction can lead to much greater polydispersities, however. These concepts of polymerization reaction engineering have been introduced in more detail elsewhere (6). [Pg.436]

Polymer journals are very plentiful and most of them are relatively broad in coverage. Examples - Polymer the international journal for the science and technology of polymers). Progress in Polymer Science and New Polymeric Materials. To repeat a statement made in Chapter 2 As late as I960, only four journals were devoted exclusively to polymers - two in English, one in German and one in Russian. Now, however, the field is saturated a survey in 1994 came up with 57 journal titles devoted to polymers that could be found in the Science Citation Index, and this does not include minor journals that were not cited. ... [Pg.516]

Polyethylene and polypropylene are semitransparent plastics made by polymerization. They are produced from ethylene and propylene in a variety of grades. Their mechanical properties are determined mainly by density (degree of crystallinity) and molecular weight, characterized by the Melt Index (MI). [Pg.105]

The MWD is the ratio of Mw Mn and is called the polydispersity index. This largely varies from one grade of polymer to the other, depending on the polymerization conditions and the type of catalyst used. Figure 14 shows different types of MWD for the polymers. [Pg.287]

Bleached cotton stalk pulp is treated with different concentrations of ethylene diamine (50-100%) for 20 min. It is clear that the crystallinity index (CrI) of these treated pulps is decreased by increasing the concentration of ethylene diamine that is, the decrystallization increases. The degree of polymerization is nearly the same, but some increase is shown in the sample treated with 100% ethylene diamine. This indicates that 100% ethylene diamine may act as a dissolving agent for low degree of polymerization (DP) of cellulosic chains and hemicellulose. [Pg.536]

The melt flow index describes the viscosity of a solid plastic. It is the weight in grams of a polymer extruded through a defined orifice at a specified time. The melt viscosity and the melt flow index can measure the extent of polymerization. A polymer with a high melt flow index has a low melt viscosity, a lower molecular weight, and usually a lower impact tensile strength. [Pg.318]

The properties of commercial polypropylene vary widely according to the percentage of crystalline isotactic polymer and the degree of polymerization. Polypropylenes with a 99% isotactic index are currently produced. [Pg.331]

The first difference of normal stresses (tr, t) may serve as an indirect index of the highly elastic properties of polymeric systems [199]. C. D. Han [200] related (ru with the residual pressure at outlet Pt)dt. Han, who observed its reduction in polypropylene filled with calcium carbonate [201], concluded that filling decreases the normal stresses. Note that addition of fibrous fillers, vice versa, somewhat increases Pexi, [180]. [Pg.28]

A common error is to confuse the GPC distribution with the weight distribution. The response of a refractive index detector is proportional to the mass of polymer. The GPC elution volume (V) typically scales according to the logarithm of the degree of polymerization (or the logarithm of the molecular... [Pg.241]

Assuming that no intramolecular or side reactions take place and that all groups are equireactive, the polydispersity index, 7P, of hyperbranched polymers obtained by step-growth polymerization of ABX monomers is given by Eq. (2.2), where pA is die conversion in A groups.196 Note that the classical Flory relationship DPn = 1/(1 — pa) holds for ABX monomer polymerizations ... [Pg.57]

To run the residence time distribution experiments under conditions which would simulate the conditions occurring during chemical reaction, solutions of 15 weight percent and 30 percent polystyrene in benzene as well as pure benzene were used as the fluid medium. The polystyrene used in the RTD experiment was prepared in a batch reactor and had a number average degree of polymerization of 320 and a polydispersity index, DI, of 1.17. [Pg.304]

This trend is illustrated by the curves for the micro-mixed reactor in Figures 8 through 14. Also characteristic of the seeded, micro-mixed reactor is the convergence of the polydispersity index to 2 for a high degree of polymerization. This trend is illustrated to some extent in Table VI which presents the calculated degrees of polymerizations. [Pg.321]
