INDEX oxides

The oxides of nitrogen collectively are oxidants with power increasing with oxygen content. Dinitrogen oxide will often support violent combustion, since its oxygen content (36.5%) approaches double that of atmospheric air. Nitrogen oxide and dinitrogen oxide are both endothermic and capable of detonation in the liquid state. Individually indexed oxides are ... [Pg.311]

Compounding is a complex processing method for obtaining materials with expected properties (including melt flow index, oxidation induction time and mechanical properties) during processing. [Pg.93]

FIGURE 22.11 Average maximum hydroperoxide indexes (oxidation potential) for the three categories of historical and conventional acetabular liners, summarized in Table 22.1 [42]. Substantial regional variation was observed in the maximum oxidation potential of retrieved liners ( significant differences in paired t-tests). [Pg.333]

Lead oxide is used in producing fine "crystal glass" and "flint glass" of a high index of refraction for achromatic lenses. The nitrate and the acetate are soluble salts. Lead salts such as lead arsenate have been used as insecticides, but their use in recent years has been practically eliminated in favor of less harmful organic compounds. [Pg.86]

The high index of refraction and dispersion properties of its oxide s have made germanium useful as a component of wide-angle camera lenses and microscope objectives. [Pg.94]

Antimony Oxide. The effect of antimony trioxide on the oxygen index of flexible poly(vinyl chloride) containing from 20 to 50 parts of plasticizer is shown in Figure 2. The flame resistance as measured by the oxygen index increases with the addition of antimony oxide until the oxygen index appears to reach a maximum at about 8 parts of Sb202. Further addition of antimony oxide does not have any increased beneficial effect. [Pg.459]

Molybdenum Oxide. Molybdenum compounds incorporated into flexible PVC not only increase flame resistance, but also decrease smoke evolution. In Table 10 the effect of molybdenum oxide on the oxygen index of a flexible PVC containing 50 parts of a plasticizer is compared with antimony oxide. Antimony oxide is the superior synergist for flame retardancy but has Httle or no effect on smoke evolution. However, combinations of molybdenum oxide and antimony oxide may be used to reduce the total inorganic flame-retardant additive package, and obtain improved flame resistance and reduced smoke. [Pg.460]

Alumina Trihydrate. Alumina trihydrate is usually used as a secondary flame retardant in flexible PVC because of the high concentration needed to be effective. As a general rule the oxygen index of flexible poly(vinyl chloride) increases 1% for every 10% of alumina trihydrate added. The effect of alumina trihydrate on a flexible poly(vinyl chloride) formulation containing antimony oxide is shown in Figure 5. [Pg.461]

Antimony oxide and 2inc borate are also used as synergists for unsaturated polyesters. Their combined effect on the flame spread index (25) is ... [Pg.461]

Alkylated aromatics have excellent low temperature fluidity and low pour points. The viscosity indexes are lower than most mineral oils. These materials are less volatile than comparably viscous mineral oils, and more stable to high temperatures, hydrolysis, and nuclear radiation. Oxidation stabihty depends strongly on the stmcture of the alkyl groups (10). However it is difficult to incorporate inhibitors and the lubrication properties of specific stmctures maybe poor. The alkylated aromatics also are compatible with mineral oils and systems designed for mineral oils (see Benzene Toulene Xylenes and ethylbenzene). ... [Pg.264]
