Somewhat paradoxically, however, this underlying molecular asymmetry translates to a considerable symmetry of internally and externally expressed biological anatomy. Our visual consideration of this external anatomy translates to an apparent preference for the symmetrical over the asymmetrical as, for example, in the definition and recognition of beauty, possibly because the presentation of such symmetry is an index of biological fitness or quality. ... [Pg.459]

The data presented in Figs. 1 and 2 indicate that C assimilation by S. plumieri growing in an open, exposed habitat (leaf area index (LAI) of approximately 1) is limited by intercepted PAR. This is a consequence of both canopy architecture (leaf orientation and mutual shading) and leaf anatomy (Figs. 4 and 5) The reduced interception of radiation does not appear to be a water conservation mechanism as instantaneous values of WUE increase with PPFD (Fig. 6) and on a daily... [Pg.3683]

Kawashima et al (1996) published a PET study in man about the functional anatomy of GO/NO-GO discrimination and response selection. In the response selection task, subjects were instructed to flex their thumb or index of the right hand immediately after the LED turned on red or green, respectively. In the GO/ NO-GO task, subjects were asked to flex their thumb immediately after the LED turned on red, however they were asked not to move their fingers when the LED turned on green. In the control task, subjects were asked to look at the LED without any movements. [Pg.323]
