The treatment of waste is the third element of the hierarchy and should be utilized only in the absence of feasible source reduction or recychng opportunities. Waste treatment involves the use of chemical, biological, or physical processes to reduce or eliminate waste material. The incineration of wastes is included in this categoiy and is considered preferable to other treatment methods (i.e., chemical, biological, and physical) because incineration can permanently destroy the hazardous components in waste materials (Ref. 4). It can also be employed to reduce the volume of waste to be treated. [Pg.2165]

If arrangements for incineration of waste solvent and disposal of solid chemical waste by licensed contract disposal services are nol in place, a list of providers of such services should be available from a state or local office of environmental protection. [Pg.265]

The review is not meant to promote degradable plastics, but rather to highlight them as one possible route to a cleaner environment. In many applications, recycling of polymers or incineration of waste products may offer more protection to the environment. The final decision for any application requires careful deliberation and not emotional judgements. [Pg.2]

The incineration of waste containing PVC has been a source of much discussion and comment, particularly related to the dioxin and HC1 emissions (66,106, 282, 341). PVC was also targeted in the EU incineration directive (297). [Pg.12]

The strong acid, HCl, is also emitted by other processes like incineration of waste, or steel making and might be regionally important for acidification but not on a greater scale. Lightowlers and Cape (1988) estimated a source of 260 Gg a" for the UK in 1983. On a global scale, release of HCl from sea salt aerosols and... [Pg.1964]

Directive 1996/61/EC on Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC), and the incineration of waste. The cement sector proposed that waste combustion (other than biomass) be considered. A factor of 1 was used for this purpose (Spanish NAP, p. 50). [Pg.201]

Incineration of waste offers an advantage. Less land is ruined in disposal of the solid ash left after incineration. In some cases, the heat from incineration has been used to generate electricity. Despite advantages over landfills, simple incineration with or without electrical generation has not proven to be a quality method of solid waste disposal. Trash is a poor fuel so it does not produce a hot fire when it... [Pg.156]
