Incidence of types

Type 2 diabetes mellitus Mutations in intron 3 of Capn10 gene is associated with increased incidence of type 2 diabetes in some populations35... [Pg.313]

Orlistat, a semisynthetic derivative of lipstatin, is a potent and selective inhibitor of pancreatic lipases. It was designed to treat obesity. Orlistat prevents approximately 25% of dietary fat from being absorbed. Very little of the drug itself is absorbed. Its adverse effects are therefore restricted to those related to fat malabsorption, with potential losses of fat-soluble vitamins. It has a relatively small effect on body mass, but enough to realise in one study a 37% reduction in the incidence of type 2 diabetes. [Pg.485]

In a meta-analysis of 16 studies of patients who were taking tacrolimus (n — 1636) or ciclosporin (n = 1407) the incidence of type 1 diabetes mellitus was significantly higher among those taking tacrolimus (10% versus 4.5%)... [Pg.650]

Prasad et al. (2000) reported that rats fed 22 mg SDG/kg and treated with the diabetes-promoting chemical streptozotocin had 75% lower incidence of type-1 diabetes than the streptozotocin-treated control group. However, the serum glucose of the SDG plus streptozotocin-treated rats had significantly higher serum glucose levels than streptozotocin-treated control group. [Pg.41]

Environmental exposures may contribute to recent increases in the rate of type 2 diabetes. For example, there is a positive correlation between concentration in the urine of bisphenol A, a constituent of polycarbonate plastic, and the incidence of type 2 diabetes. [Pg.49]

A number of studies have shown that there is a north-south gradient in the incidence of type I diabetes mellitus and that children who are given vitamin... [Pg.106]

An unexpected high incidence of type I allergic reactions to cisplatin and dacarbazine has been observed, several hours after administration to patients on a combination of aldesleukin and interferon alfa (127). The reactions occurred at least after the first cycle and increased in incidence thereafter, suggesting that immunotherapy can sensitize patients to several chemotherapeutic agents. [Pg.66]

In contrast, type II hepatotoxicity is associated with massive centrilobular liver cell necrosis that can lead to fulminant liver failure. Type II hepatotoxicity is characterized by fever, jaundice, and very high serum transaminase levels. It may be immune-medi-ated and is thought to occur in genetically predisposed individuals. The incidence of type II hepatotoxicity 1 35 000 with one exposure to halothane and... [Pg.131]

The incidence of Type-I diabetes rises from birth to 12 years of age and is most frequent around puberty. The pattern of age of onset, however, may vary widely and Type-I diabetes may also start in the 6th or even 7th decade of life (Jarret, 1991). [Pg.17]

Dialyzer reactions encompass a broad range of clinical symptoms that include anaphylactic (type A) and nonspecific (type B) events. In the past, these two types of reactions were considered to be part of the first-use syndrome because they occurred much more frequently when new, as opposed to reprocessed, dialyzers were used. Although reprocessing may reduce the incidence of type B events, it has little to no benefit for patients who experience a type A reaction. The... [Pg.856]

The incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is increasing. This has been attributed in part to increasing obesity, sedentary lifestyle, and an increasing minority population. [Pg.1333]

The prevalence of /3-cell autoimmunity appears proportional to the incidence of type 1 DM in various populations. For instance, the countries of Sweden, Sardinia, and Finland have the highest prevalence of islet cell antibody (3% to 4.5%) and are associated with the highest incidence of type 1 DM, 22 to 35 per 100,000." ... [Pg.1334]
