Immunomodulator activity

Since the pioneer work by Merigan in 1967 [1], many kinds of synthetic or natural polyanionic polymers have been examined for their biological activities [2-8], such as cytotoxicity, antiviral activity, antitumor activity, and immunomodulating activity. Although the biological results were interesting, the extent of activity for clinical application was still low.

Interferon Beta-lb (Recombinant). Interferon beta-lb, Betaseron, is a protein that is expressed in a recombinant E. colt. It is equivalent in type to the interferon that is expre.s.sed by human fibroblasts. Interferon beta-1 b possesses 165 amino acids and has an approximate molecular mass of 18.5 kDa. The native form has 166 amino acids and weighs 23 kDa. Interferon beta-lb contains a serine residue at position 17 rather than the cysteine in native IFN-/S and does not contain the complex carbohydrate side chains found in the natural molecule. In addition to its antiviral activity, interferon beta-lb po.ssesses immunomodulaling activity. 

SiZOfiran [inn.jan] (schizophyllan SPG) is a (polysaccharide) antibiotic, isolated from Schizophyllum commune, showing (immunostimulant) immunomodulator activity. It has ANTICANCER activity in a number of systems, including against sarcoma-180 ascites, and also augments anticancer properties of interleukin-2 in mice.
