Limitations identified within the scientific database include limited data on long-term consumption, limited numbers of participants in challenge studies, and limited reporting about the reasons for withdrawals from study protocols. Furthermore, some evidence suggests that a small number of individuals with celiac disease may be intolerant to pure oats and some evidence from in vitro studies suggests that an immunological response to oat avenins can occur in the absence of clinical manifestations of celiac disease as well as suggesting that oat cultivars vary in toxicity. 

From currently available data, one adult patient (1/170) challenged with oats was reported to have a severe adverse reaction to oats. Approximately 6% of adults and 9% of children withdrew from clinical trials due to reported adverse effects from the inclusion of oats in their diet. This evidence, along with the indication from some in vitro studies of an immunological response to avenin in the absence of clinical manifestations of celiac disease and the limitations of the database (previously discussed), supports a cautionary approach for the introduction of oats into a gluten-free diet until the prevalence of oats intolerance among people with celiac disease is well established (Dickey, 2008 Garsed and Scott, 2007). 

Considering the apparent functional and structural (immunological crossreactivity) conservation between plant and vertebrate NPs, it should be possible to identify Arabidopsis sequences related to preproANP in databases upon completion of the Arabidopsis genome project which is expected within the current year. While still unpublished, such a sequence may have already been identified [5]. The molecular characterization of the cDNA-encoded polypeptide will eliminate all doubts as to whether or not NPs rank among plant peptide hormones.

In the absence of reliable predictive methods for assessing potential immunological cross-reactivity, a comparative sequence analysis approach can be used to identify whether or not known epitopes from human proteins exist in a candidate vaccine antigen. The Immune Epitope Database (IEDB) provides a comprehensive reference data set for known epitopes.78 When screening potential vaccine candidates, the presence of known human-derived epitopes can be ruled out by comparison against the IEDB (www.iedb.org). 

In summary, the wildlife toxicity database for PCBs summarized in Table 3-6 contributes to the weight of evidence supporting the critical health effects used in the MRL derivations (i.e., neurological/behavioral, immunological, and dermal/ocular effects), as well as other PCB-induced effects that are particularly relevant to human health (e.g., reproductive and developmental toxicity).
