Illness, defined

Modern methods of amino-acid and peptide analysis, have enabled the complete amino-acid sequence of a number of proteins to be worked out. The grosser structure can be determined by X-ray diffraction procedures. Proteins have molecular weights ranging from about 6 000 000 to 5 000 (although the dividing line between a protein and a peptide is ill defined). Edible proteins can be produced from petroleum and nutrients under fermentation. [Pg.332]

Many-body problems wnth RT potentials are notoriously difficult. It is well known that the Coulomb potential falls off so slowly with distance that mathematical difficulties can arise. The 4-k dependence of the integration volume element, combined with the RT dependence of the potential, produce ill-defined interaction integrals unless attractive and repulsive mteractions are properly combined. The classical or quantum treatment of ionic melts [17], many-body gravitational dynamics [18] and Madelung sums [19] for ionic crystals are all plagued by such difficulties. [Pg.2159]

The entire Hving and material world consists of compounds and mixtures of compounds. Basic chemicals, such as ethylene, are produced in many millions of tons each year and are converted into a wide variety of other chemicals. Complicated molecular structures are synthesized by Mother Nature, or by chemists having taken up the challenge posed by Nature. However, we also have materials such as glues which are composed of mixtures of rather ill-defined polymers. [Pg.1]

Chapter 3, there is often a region immediately preceding the lower closure point, in which increased adsorption is brought about by reversible capillary condensation. The meniscus now tends to be somewhat ill defined owing to its small dimensions (p. 153), but the mechanism can still be thought of in Kelvin terms, where the driving force is the pressure difference across an interface. [Pg.244]

There are ill-defined limits on EI/CI usage, based mostly on these issues of volatility and thermal stability. Sometimes these limits can be extended by preparation of a suitable chemical derivative. For example, polar carboxylic acids generally give either no or only a poor yield of molecular ions, but their conversion into methyl esters affords less polar, more volatile materials that can be examined easily by EL In the absence of an alternative method of ionization, EI/CI can still be used with clever manipulation of chemical derivatization techniques. [Pg.283]

Liquid diops, suspended in a continuous liquid medium, separate according to the same laws as solid paiticles. Aftei reaching a boundary, these drops coalesce to form a second continuous phase separated from the medium by an interface that may be well- or ill-defined. The discharge of these separated layers is controlled by the presence of dams in the flow paths of the phases. The relative radii of these dams can be shown by simple hydrostatic considerations to determine the radius of the interface between the two separated layers. The radius is defined by... [Pg.403]

For a binary system, the two possible opportunistic distillations are essentially identical and can be combined to concentrate the feed up to about 68% 2-propanol and produce pure water. The feed and products of the two possible strategic separations are ill-defined, whereas those of the opportunistic separation are known as outlined in Table 6. [Pg.454]

The feed compositions and products of each of these strategic separations remain ill-defined. The unspecified 2-propanol—water mixture, the input to each strategic separation, could be but is not necessarily the original feed composition. The MSA composition (pure hexane in this case) is such that one of the products of the strategic separation is in region II, ie, the strategic separation crosses the distillation boundary. Two opportunistic distillations from... [Pg.455]

Significant amounts of comonomer also reduce the abiUty of the polymer to form lamellar crystals from solution. In some cases, the polymer merely gels the solution as it precipitates rather than forming distinct crystals. At somewhat higher VDC content, it may precipitate in the form of aggregated, ill-defined particles and clusters. [Pg.432]

CO3) XH2O and Ce202(C03) may also be present. Thermal decomposition causes loss of crystallization water followed by the formation of ill-defined hydroxy- and oxy-species and eventually, at C, Ce02. Discrete intermediates are not seen because of the concomitant oxidation of Ce(III) to Ce(IV). [Pg.367]

Phase Dispersed There is an ill-defined upper limit to the volume fraction of dispersed liquid which may be maintained in an agitated dispersion. For dispersions of organic liquids in water [Quinn and Siglon, Can.J. Chem. Eng., 41, 15 (1963)],... [Pg.1639]

In this derivation, the diffusion coefficient which is used is really a parameter, since it is not certain which gas diffusion rate is controlling, that of hydrogen into a pore, or that of water vapour out of die pore. The latter seems to be the most probable, but the path of diffusion will be vety tormous drrough each pore and drerefore the length of the diffusion path is ill-defined. [Pg.271]

A very simple version of this approach was used in early applications. An alchemical charging calculation was done using a distance-based cutoff for electrostatic interactions, either with a finite or a periodic model. Then a cut-off correction equal to the Born free energy, Eq. (38), was added, with the spherical radius taken to be = R. This is a convenient but ill-defined approximation, because the system with a cutoff is not equivalent to a spherical charge of radius R. A more rigorous cutoff correction was derived recently that is applicable to sufficiently homogeneous systems [54] but appears to be impractical for macromolecules in solution. [Pg.189]

In moving catalyst basket reactors, the flow regime is ill-defined and the contact between catalyst and gas can be poor even if well-mixed conditions for the fluid phase are achieved. Perhaps the most successful representative of this category is the Carberry reactor (1964, 1966). Even in this model only a single layer of catalyst can be charged in the cruciform catalyst basket because the fluid flows in a radial direction outward and... [Pg.45]

Ill-defined stain format because it is irregular, diffuse or has failed, i.e. not at right angles to tube wall. (This can be caused by poor quality of granular support medium used by manufacturer.) It is advisable to read the maximum value indicated. [Pg.353]

Ditamine, CigHi902N, and echitenine, CjqHj O N, which according to Hesse accompany echitamine in A. scholaris and A. spectabilis are ill-defined products. Alstonamine, also found in the latter, is crystalline but of unknown composition. [Pg.720]

Achillea spp. A. millefolium L. contains achilleine, amorphous hydrolysed to achUletine, CnHj,04N, also amorphous, ammonia and a reducing sugar. Clearly defined assessment criteria. Clearly defining the criteria against which existing PSM programs will be evaluated helps to minimize the margin for error and maximize objectivity. Ill-defined evaluation criteria require the person conducting the assessment to rely solely on individual skill and experience, which may or may not yield objective results. [Pg.75]
