Mice immunized intranasally with chimeric PVX particles expressing a six-amino-acid neutralizing epitope from gp 41 of HIV-1 produced high levels of HIV-l-specific IgG and IgA antibodies [50], The anti-H66 IgG titers ranged from 2000 to >30,000. Mice immunized intranasally produced IgA in the serum and in fecal extracts. 

During penicillin treatment the erythrocytes are normally coated with penicillin, thereby forming a penicilloyl bond on their surface (49). A drug-specific IgG antibody is directed against the complete antigen, that is the penicU-lin-erythrocyte complex, and can be shown in direct and indirect Coombs tests. Clinical hemolysis therefore requires both sufficient coating of erythrocytes and high anti-penicilloyl IgG titers.

Blood was collected from patients and clarified. Sera were stored at -80 °C. IgM and IgG titers to OSM or STn were evaluated in serum samples. These antigens were used as the target in solid phase enzyme-linked immunoabsorbant assays before and after treatment with Theratope as previously described 17). 

As outlined in Table IV, in a multivariable analysis, patients with intermediate and high risk for relapse had greatly increased rates of death compared to lower risk patients. Recipients of the second formulation of Theratope vaccine had a lower risk of death than recipients of the first formulation of vaccine. Higher IgG titers of antibody to OSM was associated with lower rates of death. Proliferative index against STn and OVACAR killing with IL2 or without IL2 stimulation were not stastically significantly different.

Previous research has suggested that VA deficiency is associated with a reduction in the production of IgA such a decrease may be related to the often-increased severity of infections observed in VA-deficient children and the poor recovery of mucosal epithelia following infection in animal models (see chapter in this book by R. Semba). The IgA response to influenza A in VA-deficient mice was reduced in lung tissue, yet influenza A-specific IgG titers in tracheal and lung lavage fluids did not differ between VA-deficient and control mice [25]. 

After three infusions of multiple-emulsions formulations, the animals produced both intestinal secratory IgA and circulating IgG antibody responses. The IgG titers persisted for one year and were boosted by a further oral immunization. Oral immunization using multiple emulsions also uniformly primed the animals for an increased response following parenteral immunization.
